Rating (out of 5):

I get a lot of movies in to review.  Some I get curious about and request while others are sent to me without my knowledge.  I review everything sent to me but sometimes these films are not horror.  Most of the time if they are not horror they are exploitation flicks of some kind while there is other types that show up.  Sometime ago I got in the fantasy film aimed for children I Kill Giants from my friends at Umbrella Entertainment.  The artwork and press release for the film looked fun so I couldn't wait to check it out.  I've been very horror heavy the last few days so I decided to mix it up a little and toss in this one.  Thanks Umbrella for sending it over.
The film follows young Barbara (Wolfe) who lives a rough life with her older sister and younger siblings.  She has no friends in school so she seeks refuge in a fantasy world she has created for herself where giants and titans are real and she is the only one that can defeat them using a powerful ancient warhammer.  However, that is not the case and she is using this to escape the real horrors of her life and her bed ridden mother who is dying.
I had heard mixed things about this one.  Some people said this was a fun escape from the real world while others said they didn't like the way the story unfolds.  I tend to go against the masses and couldn't wait to check it out.  I'm glad I did because this was a fun one.  The acting in this one is phenomenal.  Madison Wolfe was born to play Barbara.  Its going to be difficult for me to see her in any other role.  She was amazing and this young actress has a long career ahead of her with performances like this.  The supporting cast is great as well.  They do an amazing job and really move the story along.  The story for this one works very well for a fantasy film aimed to children.  Not all children have perfect home lives.  Hell, I sure as fuck didn't.  My childhood sucked and I'm glad this movie didn't follow a character that grew up in an upper middle class suburb.  Having a child escape the horrors of the real world and enter her own fantasy world is what many children like this do.  I lived in my head a lot growing up and this is very relatable.  The pacing in this one is a little off which makes several of the scenes very heavy but the overall story works very well.  Finally, this is not a bloody one.  There is visual effects that look decent enough but they will not age well.  I liked the look of the titans but the giants did look silly.  Overall, I Kill Giants is a fantastic family film.  This is the kind of movie I would have loved growing up and will show to my kids soon when they are a little older to appreciate movies.  Check it out.

Format - DVD (Personal Collection)

Rating (out of 5):

I absolutely love the 80s.  Most, if not all, of my favorite horror films are from the 80s.  I often find myself adopting fashion and music trends of this decade and anyone that knows me knows how often I use catchphrases from this forgotten decade.  So many modern horror films try to capture that 80s look and feel.  Some succeed while others fail miserably.  A few days back I was sent a link to a Facebook page for the film Hexercise.  I was floored when I watched the teaser for it.  I had to have it so I ordered a copy.  I'm glad I did.  I was disappointed when I discovered that it was a short but I still had a lot of fun with it.
The short follows a fitness center that was built over a Satanic church.  As young adults attempt to get their bodies in shape they are hunted one by one by an evil Satanic presence.
A lot of unique horror films has passed through Horror Society what time I've been reviewing on the site.  Some of these films were very fun and unforgettable and a few of them were unique but not entertaining.  Hexercise is a damn entertaining horror short but there is so much more it could have been.  I would have loved to see a feature length film with dialogue instead of a short musical film that lacked character interaction.  The acting in this one is a little unconventional but fun.  The cast doesn't talk but they still have to get into character and show their emotions through body and facial gestures.  They do a great job and make the film fun.  The story for this one is fucking amazing but the short length of the film really takes away from the impact.  There is so much you can do with this storyline and the 20 or so minutes we get is just not enough to get your money's worth out of it.  People really need a hour or longer version of this.  Finally, the film does have a few on screen skills that offer up some blood and minimal practical effects.  The effects are solid but nothing memorable.  Overall, Hexercise is a short that serves as a physical representation for artist's Lapse's new album.  It is a fun experience but there needs to be more!  It was just too fun to be a short.

Angel

Director - Tory Jones (The Wicked One, Killbillies)
Starring - Sonya Delormier (Scream for Summer, Lost Creek), Cameryn Zupon (Scream for Summer), and Dale Miller (Dead Moon Rising, Gila!)
Release Date - 2018
Genre - Horror
Format - Streaming (Online Screener)

Rating (out of 5):
I grew up renting slashers in the 90s.  I often rented the classic late 70s and 80s slashers but I found myself intrigued by those 90s slashers.  I was not really a fan of them but there was a few that were entertaining.  I like my slashers in the woods or terrorizing sleepovers.  We rarely get those anymore.  Sometime ago director and producer Shawn Burkett (my bae) hit me up that he was working with director Tory Jones on a new slasher.  He sent over a teaser image and trailer for Angel and it looked like a slasher that was taking me back in the woods for some carnage.  I honestly didn't care for the title but it fits the film so it makes sense.  A few days back he announced the physical release of the film (this Friday) and hit me up with a review link.  It looked fun so I had to check it out and I'm glad I did.
The film follows a group of journalists who enter an abandoned logging town in order to investigate a series of missing people that has spanned sometime.  One of them is from this area and knows that it is not safe to venture there but does so when a heavy price was paid in order for her to lead the group.  Once there they start going missing one by one and she remembers the legend of Angel.  A feral woman that kills everyone that wonders too close.  Now they must fight their way out along with the man responsible for sending them there in hopes of finding his daughter.
I've seen countless modern slashers.  Most try to capture that 80s look and vibe while others try to mimic the look of 90s slashers like Scream.  I rarely see a slasher that tries to do its own thing anymore.  Most want to be a throwback instead of something original.  Angel is a hybrid slasher.  It follows that traditional slasher storyline with some of the elements you see late 90s and early 00s slashers.  I would normally hate something like that but Angel is able to pull it all together and make it work.  The acting in this one was hit and miss for me.  Sonya Delormier does a solid job throughout the film but there was several scenes where her anger did not feel genuine.  These intense scenes lost impact because she just didn't come across as really being angry.  She was just raising her voice but lacked the emotion.  With that being said, she is one hell of a final girl.  She did a fantastic job interacting with the rest of the cast and gave the role everything she had to offer.  I also enjoyed Dale Miller's performance.  His character is one of the more entertaining characters in the film and one of the few you actually don't want to see die.  He goes through a wide emotional range and his performance really pulls the viewer's in.  Cameryn Zupon also delivers a solid performance.  Her character is rather flat and generic but she still takes it and makes it her own.  I did laugh a little at her "break down" scene but outside of that she was great.  The remainder of the cast delivers a solid job as well.  I want to go through and praise every cast member but my fat ass is too lazy for that.  The story for this one is a little too long for the story but that is nothing a little tighter editing can't fix.  I liked how the film followed the traditional "you wronged me" story line made famous in films like Prom Night and Friday the 13th.  However, it doesn't follow the typical "who dun it" story like those films.  Instead, we get the same style of slasher that you could find post-Scream.  This was a fun mix.  My biggest complaints about the film is the run time and the characters.  The movie could be trimmed to work out some of those slower scenes that may push some viewer's away.  They are too long and serve very little purpose to the story.  As for the characters, they were hard to like.  There was so many characters that I wished had died.  They are just flat, generic characters that you can't get behind.  These characters are easily forgettable with the exception of one of two.  Finally, the film does have a few deaths.  The deaths we get are standard slasher kills with solid special effects but they are easily forgettable.  None really stand out but they are fun for the film itself.  Overall, Angel is a slasher that doesn't sniff its own farts.  It doesn't take itself too seriously and delivers a great slasher experience.  The focus of the film wasn't to reinvent the sub-genre but to offer up a fun slasher and it succeeds.  Jones has an eye for detail and this is one solid slasher for slasher fans.  Check it out.

The Changeling

Director - Peter Medak (The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt)
Starring - George C. Scott (The Exorcist III, The Murders in the Rue Morgue), Trish Van Devere (The Hearse, Highway to Heaven), and Melvyn Douglas (The Death Squad, Circle of Fear)
Release Date - 1980
Genre - Horror
Tagline - "How did you die, Joseph? Did you die in this house? Why do you remain?"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

Horror and haunted houses were made for each other.  Horror literature centered around haunted homes, castles, or locations have been circulated for thousands of years.  Some of the greatest horror stories ever written are centered around a haunted structure.  Horror movies are no exception.  Haunted house flicks have been crowd pleasers for well over a hundred years with no signs of slowing down after the success of the Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring series.  When you talk paranormal horror movies most people automatically think of the Amityville Horror series but there is so many other better movies.  Sometime ago Severin Films released the 1980 film The Changeling.  This is one of those movies I never hear people mention so I assumed it was a waste of time.  Fuck,  was I wrong!
The film follows senior composer John Russell (Scott) who lost his young bride and child in an automobile accident.  He relocated to Seattle and rents an old mansion from the historic society.  The home has sit vacant for some time so he moves in with the help of Claire (Douglas).  The first few nights he awakens to a strange sound that sounds like a bell but the grounds keeper is unable to determine where it is coming from.  He starts investigating the home and discovers a hidden room which looks like it once belonged to a young boy.  He holds a séance with a medium when more strange occurrences happen and discovers that there is a spirit of a young boy named Joseph there who is saying his father killed him.  Joseph is also the name of a wealth senator who once occupied the home.  The further John gets into his investigation the deeper into a conspiracy he gets involving the elderly senator and the spirit who are both claiming to be the same person.
I went into this one expecting something that I would forget once my review was written but I was wrong.  This is one of the best supernatural films I have ever seen.  I absolutely fucking loved it and I'm bitter I waited this long to watch it.  The acting in this one is fucking legendary.  George C. Scott gives a powerhouse performance.  This is the first film of his that I had scene where he was the sole star and he absolutely killed it.  I loved his character and the dedication to it he had.  The supporting cast is just as amazing.  Medak has to be one hell of a director because this cast was directed very well.  They all work very well together and absolutely killed it.  The story for this one is very exciting and fast paced but is still able to build suspense and tension.  The Changeling is very story rich and does a fantastic job with character development as well.  There was a few slower scenes but they still deliver on the story and help with the tension.  Finally, this ghost story is not a bloody one.  We do get a few deaths but they are more stylish than gruesome.  Overall, The Changeling is fucking fantastic.  I absolutely loved it and I can't wait to wash it again.  This is the type of film you can revisit it and still enjoy yourself.  Be sure to grab the Severin release to add to your collection.

The Horror of Party Beach

Director - Del Tenney (The Curse of the Living Corpse, I Eat Your Skin)
Starring - John Scott (The Curse of the Living Corpse), Alice Lyon, and Allan Laurel
Release Date - 1964
Genre - Horror
Tagline - "Weird atomic beasts who live off human blood"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):
I have a big heart for horror.  There is so many sub-genres, decades, trends, and eras that I love.  From pre-Romero zombie films to modern horror porn.  I love it all.  I have a soft spot for horror and exploitation films from the drive-in era of cinema.  These cheesy and campy tales remind me of checking out movies on cable late at night or renting them on tape at the local ma and pop video store as a kid.  I own a metric ton of these films but there is always a movie from this time getting a release that I have never heard of.  A few months back Severin Films released the 1964 creature feature The Horror of Party Beach on blu.  I had never seen this one so I reached out to them for a review copy.  They were kind enough to send one my way.
The film follows a small beach community when a string of murders pop up.  The police and a couple of twenty somethings investigate them when they uncover a severed hand from an unknown creature.  They are able to uncover that the hand belonged to a creature who needs human blood to survive.  Now they have to stop it before it kills again...but it isn't alone.

I always go into a 1960s creature feature with high expectations and I'm rarely let down.  I don't mean high standards.  I mean that I have high expectations in regards to the cheesy factor.  Movies like The Horror of Party Beach always have that campy vibe that makes for a great late night viewing experience.  This film was no exception.  The acting in this matching the film.  The cast hams up every scene but they do it well.  They really get into their characters and have fun doing it.  The story for this one is simple but fits in perfectly with the age of the atomic and radioactive monsters.  Creatures that were born from toxic waste dumped on dead bodies in the ocean is pretty fucking awesome.  My biggest complaint is that this story would have worked very well as a serious monster movie instead of the one in the same line as The Giant Claw.  Finally, if you want blood and gore you wont find it.  If you want just a little fake blood and rubber monster suits that look like monsters have a mouth full of hot dogs then you came to the right place!  Overall, The Horror of Party Beach is a fun monster movies from the 60s that doesn't take itself seriously.  It is entertaining for what it is and the blu from Severin looks great.  Check it out.

Shocking Dark

Director - Bruno Mattei (Hell of the Living Dead, Zombie 3)
Starring - Christopher Ahrens (Blue Tornado, Boom), Haven Tyler, and Geretta Geretta (Demons, Rats: Night of Terror)
Release Date - 1989
Genre - Horror/Sci-Fi
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

Burno Mattei is an unusual name when it comes to Italian cinema.  His career saw many ups and downs but he has mad a well known name for himself directing 80s horror and sci-fi films like Hell of the Living Dead, Zombie 3, and Rats: Nights of Terror.  He did continue to make films up until the 2000s but his 80s horror films are classics.  Several months back I got the 1989 sci-fi horror film Shocking Dark which was billed in Italy for a short period of time as Terminator 2.  Mattei has had an amazing career but that doesn't mean that all his movies are memorable.  Him and I have a rocky relationship where the movies of his I like I actually love and the ones I don't care for I actually hate.  Shocking Dark is one of those films that I loved and did not want to end.
The film is set in a future where Venice is uninhabitable due to pollution.  The water is extremely toxic which has forced everyone to move away.  Scientists try to work on a solution so an armed military group takes a scientist into the city to run tests when they encounter monsters have been thriving on the pollution.  Now they must fight for their lives in order to escape but one of them is not what they seem and they are once against struck with another evil menace to fight and this one is powered by a major corporate who created the toxic mess for financial profit.
I'm always skeptical of a Bruno Mattei movie I had never seen before.  Shocking Dark is one of those films that I had never heard of until the release was announced so I chalked it up to being one of the shittier Mattei flicks hence why I had never heard of it.  Lucky for me I was dead fucking wrong because this was a fun experience.  The acting in this one is decent.  The cast does a solid job in their roles but some of the roles could have been casted better than they were.  The civilians are solid but some of the soldiers just didn't look like soldiers.  They were dedicated to their role but they just didn't have the physical look of a soldier.  The story for this one is cheesy 80s sci-fi horror fun.  The future with toxic waters breeding monsters was pretty fun especially how the film was set up.  We get deep into this story before the Terminator like element was tossed in which caught me off guard.  I was expecting it but once the film was rolling I completely forgot about it.  The film has solid pacing and just enough action to hold your attention.  Finally, the film has several on screen kills.  This isn't a bloody or gory one but it does have tons of practical effects ranging from the creature suits to the prosthetics for the robot.  The effects look awesome but the shotgun deaths did look like trash.  Overall, Shocking Dark is shockingly entertaining.  It does suffer from budget issues but it still hits the spot for those looking for 80s sci-fi action.  Check out the blu from Severin Films.

Slender Man

Director - Sylvain White (Sleepy Hollow, The Loser)
Starring - Joey King (The Flash, R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour), Julia Goldani Telles (Nurse Jackie, Blue Bloods), and Jaz Sinclaire (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Vampire Diaries)
Release Date - 2018
Genre - Horror
Format - DVD (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

I'm not one to follow trends.  I love horror but internet trends and fads are something that have never caught my attention.  A lot of modern horror fans are obsessed with creepy pastas and internet dares like Charlie Charlie.  One popular creepy pasta is that of the slender man.  A tall, thin beings in a suit that follows young kids and teens for days before abducting them.  This has been the subject of several movies and indie games along with a few amateur comics.  Last year it was announced that slender man would get a theatrical film with a solid budget.  I rolled my eyes at the idea but the trailer hooked me.  It looked interesting.  When the film was released I reached out for a review copy and was lucky enough to get one sent my way.
The film follows a group of teenage girls who are having a sleepover where they are underage drinking and sneaking adult content on their laptop when they decide to try something different.  They go to the deepest parts of the internet and find a video that warns those that watch it that they will be stalked by the mysterious slender man.  They watch it and the next day their lives are forever changes.  One by one they fall prey to the horrors of slender man.
A few months back I checked out the Dustin Mills' film Ouija: Blood Ritual which was a found footage movie based around creepy pasta.  I don't really follow internet trends, challenges, or creepy pasta so I know nothing about these things prior to the movie.  Blood Ritual was a bit of a let down so I didn't expect a lot from Slender Man.  Even with not expecting much from the film I was still disappointed.  The acting in this one is not that great.  The cast really acts like teenage high school girls but even during the more intense scenes they still have that attitude going which is not realistic.  My other complaint is that the girls are virtually identical in several ways which makes it easier for the viewer to confuse the cast.  Their personalities are so close together that the viewer will struggle with the story until the midway point in the film.  The supporting cast is similar.  The characters are very flat with nothing that makes them stand out.  The story for this one is just messy and extremely boring.  The movie moves extremely slow and the story is one we have seen so many times in the passed.  It took storylines from films like The Grudge and Fear.com and turned it into creepypasta.  To make matter worse, it has no tension or suspense.  We jump from one "scare" to the other with nothing redeeming in between.  Finally, if you want large amounts of blood and gore you might want to look somewhere else.  This one does have a few visual and practical effects.  Both of which were very lackluster and cheap.  Overall, Slender Man is one of the biggest wastes of time I have ever sit through.  I'm so glad this was one I skipped on when it was in theaters.  I just wish I had my time back from watching this one.

Snake Outta Compton

Director - Hank Braxtan (Return of the Ghostbusters, Unnatural)
Starring - Ricky Flowers Jr. (South Arcadia St., Show Me Your Glory: The Movie), Motown Maurice (Oishi: Demon Hunter, Alien Expedition), and Donte Essien (Stepping High, The Fosters)
Release Date - 2018
Genre - Horror/Comedy
Tagline - "The true story of the world's most dangerous spoof"
Format - DVD (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

I love stupid movies.  God damn do I love stupid movies.  It seems like the dumber the movies are the more fun I have.  People often confuse fun movies and good movies.  Fun movies are just that.  They don't have to be good but they do entertain.  Good movies are good.  They have great cinematography, amazing cast, a solid script, and an unforgettable story.  Both of these can be entertaining but I prefer the no budget fun movies over a good movie any day.  Some time ago I received a press release for the Straight Outta Compton spoof Snake Outta Compton.  It made waves across social media and many horror fans were either amped up about it or instantly bashed it.  I was excited.  I couldn't wait to check it out and when I got the review solicit I had to reply.  Sadly, the film was not as entertaining as the title.
The film follows a nerd, Vurkel (Essien), who finds a snake embryo from a snake that had fell off a plane.  He takes it to his lab (his bedroom) where he uses a special laser to mutate it but this fails when his laser loses power because his roommate is having a house party and the sound system overloaded it.  What he doesn't know is that his failed experiment has now mutated his snake and its is growing in size by the second until it reaches gigantic proportions.  He must find it before it gets out of hand but he fails to capture it and now Compton is in danger if he cant catch it along with his roommate and his roommates rap group.
I went into this one expecting a few laughs here and there and some cheesy SyFy quality creature fun but what I got was a movie that will be easily forgotten with some of the worst humor I've witnessed on film.  The acting in this one is actually damn good.  I really enjoyed the cast and the characters they brought to life.  The film may be forgettable but these characters are not.  The cast does an amazing job and no one overshadows the other.  It is very consistent acting and well written characters that make the movie somewhat enjoyable.  The story for this one has so much potential but once you hit the halfway point in the film it feels as if it was rushed.  We do not have a consistent story arch.  Instead we have the main focus of the film, giant snake and the rap group, with filler scenes meant to parody training day tossed in.  These two stories do intersect but it breaks the flow of the film up drastically.  The humor starts out strong but quickly fads to more story driven which it fails to capture.  Finally, if you want blood and gore you won't find it here.  There is some blood but its mostly horrible CGI.  We do get a great looking snake makeup effects but that is hidden in the sea of horrible visuals.  Overall, Snake Outta Compton was meant to be cheap laughs but focuses more on the cheap.  It does deserve a late night watch with some alcohol but don't expect much more than that.

Release Date - 2018

Rating (out of 5):

I have controversial opinions on popular horror series.  Not too long ago I reviewed a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and I discussed my favorites in the series and which ones I felt were overrated.  I have similar opinions on the Halloween series as well.  Honestly, Halloween III is the best in the series but if you are looking at the Myers' films I absolutely love the first 6 films and Rob Zombie's remake.  I love them all and can watch them all back to back.  I want to like H20, Resurrection, and Rob Zombie's sequel but I can't.  When the trailer for the new Halloween premiered I was not impressed.  The trailer was pretty boring and did nothing to excite me for the film.  In fact, I was so not interested in this one at all so I didn't request it to review.  After the release I was at Wal-Mart and thought why not and grabbed it.  Now here I am...
The film follows Laurie Strode several decades after the events of Halloween (ignoring all other Halloween sequels).  She has turned into a survivalist who refuses to let go of her past.  Laurie's daughter was raised to defend herself but she did not pass that down to her own daughter who is now a teenager in high school. With Halloween approaching Laurie is on edge and this years she has every right to be.  Michael is being transported to a new facility and the vehicle transporting him has crash and he is now loose.  Laurie tries to protect her family but they push it off as her being paranoid and old but Laurie is right.  Michael is able to get his hands on his old mask thanks to two true crime podcasters and now is making his way to Haddonfield settle the score.
I wanted to like this but so much was just wrong about it.  The original Halloween and the sequel are amazing films that should be played back to back.  Honestly, I can't watch the first without watching the second.  They pick up just moments apart and follow Laurie.  Now, I understand the mythos with each film but how can a film that follows Laurie completely ignore the first sequel and still call itself Halloween?  A sequel to Halloween is Halloween?  Ok, I can look passed that.  It's stupid but doesn't make this movie a bad movie but other elements do.  The acting in this one is alright but nothing spectacular.  The cast does what is required of them and they do it well but the characters are just so damn unlikable that their performances seem lackluster.  Even Jamie Lee Curtis, the reason everyone loves Halloween, is now portraying a character that is just aggravating.  Her character has went from final girl to Crazy Ralph with a shotgun.  That sounds bad ass on paper but her personality is just so sour.  I know it's to fit with her backstory but it just doesn't work for me.  The same can be said about her daughter and granddaughter.  They are unlikable characters that just do nothing for the story.  In fact, I was extremely disappointed when they didn't die.  This is the first Halloween film where I was rooting for Myers.  The story itself is more of what we got in the original and the last portion of Rob Zombie's remake but with a much older Laurie Strode.  We once again follow Michael Myers as he escapes a mental health facility and makes his way after Laurie on Halloween while killing everyone in his way.  The big exception is how Laurie is now prepared for him and has built elaborate traps to catch him.  These changes are in the last act of the film and then the ending is obviously left open to write in a sequel or three.  Finally, this installment has some brutal kills.  The kills we get are what you would expect from a Halloween installment.  They are fierce and brutal while showcasing amazing practical effects.  This one does not shy away from the gore and that is the only reason this film scored as high as it did for me.  Overall, Halloween is another cash grab at the expense of horror fans.  The movie offers up nothing new to the saga of Michael Myers.  We get characters we don't like and want to watch die and a story that is mostly made up of the story from the original Halloween and part of the remake.  It does change it up at the end but that doesn't save it.  I recommend checking it out for the kills alone but this is one Halloween film I don't recommend which is saying something considering I love part 6!
