Brain Damage (Arrow Blu-Ray)

                                                               By MrParka

Arrow brings us the sleaze epic on Blu-Ray in a packed edition with all the bells and whistles.  “Brain Damage” follows the story of Brian, a handsome young man who is chosen by an ancient parasitic creature named Elmer to be his new host. Brian is given a strong hallucinogen drug, injected directly into his brain. In return, he must sometimes unknowingly bring victims to Elmer so Elmer can feed on them.
Frank Henenlotter is a director with a unique vision; his films carry an aesthetic, a certain style, which can never be mistaken. Most of his films were made in in the heyday of gritty New York City, “Brain Damage” is no different. The locations look unsafe; the interiors are lined with crud and filth while trash meanders through the streets, the human variety among it. This backdrop, along with a heavy punk scene scattered throughout the film, creates a setting that is fun to glimpse at from a distance while assuring the audience can breathe out a collective sigh of relief when the credits roll; they only have to wander a few feet to shower off the symbolic scum collected throughout the duration of the picture.  The allegory for drug abuse and addiction is heavy in “Brain Damage” and makes it dirty, timeless, and real; it’s hard to shake the scene of a Brian going through withdrawal, shaking violently on the ground, his shirt stained and skin pale. Along with this seemingly grim setting is a darkly comedic style; “Brain Damage” is filled with bizarre characters and a highly intelligent, manipulative parasite with a crude streak of humor. These elements bring an outrageous feel to the film; they mix well with its downbeat setting and fantastical concept, due to the filmmaker’s talent. Henenlotter manages to take all these elements and somehow ground it to create a wonderful world of fun, splatter, and nihilism.
The technical aspects of “Brain Damage” are a mix of practical and optical. Elmer’s design is very phallic, resembling “A black dildo” as Henenlotter put it. For a phallic creature, he is very animated; the special effects team created several Elmer’s that, when used together, create a very effective creature. Puppetry and stop motion elements are mixed and work wonderfully.  The optical effects are good for the time and hold up to this day aside for some of the work done on the subway, where Elmer keeps popping out of Brian’s mouth for a late night snack. This effect is dated, appearing subpar to the rest of the work, but has an organic charm, regardless. The lighting, mixed with some of the post optical effects, create a visually appealing film; almost everything has a wonderful blue hue to it, not your typical teal color that is seemingly oversaturated in today’s market, the colors pop so well they are truly mesmerizing. The visuals are best in the surreal drug trips. The strongest of these is when Brian’s room fills with dark blue water and his overhead light turns into an eyeball, staring into him.  Along with New York City, there are some built sets and miniatures that blend in seamlessly together.   The voice of Elmer brings a lot of life to the character; the powerful booming voice of horror host John Zacherle seals the deal, his pacing and delivery is top notch. As for the other actors in the film, they do well and while some of the performances are bizarre, it all manages to work to the film's advantage.  The bizarre synth score works with the electric imagery and optical effects; these are most used when Brian’s brain is juiced with Elmer’s drug.  One thing about “Brain Damage” that can’t go unmentioned is the splatter, the scene where Brian goes through withdrawal is by far one of the most gruesome over the top moments in any splatter flick. A healthy helping of his brains are pulled out of his head through his ear canal, it seemingly never comes to an end! Each time he pulls a string of his brain, more meat is ready to slide out, until it comes to a volcanic eruption of blood and gore.

The film looks and sounds top notch, the work Arrow has done has made everything look great. The features on the disc are there in buckets, included is a 50 minute documentary featuring many of the cast and crew, an extra interview with stills photographer, optical effects artist, fx artist Gabe Bartalos, a bittersweet stop motion film entitled “Behemoth Bygone”, a Q&A with Henenlotter, a new commentary with Henenlotter, a fan interview/collection, and more.  All and all the punk splatter, gritty New York style, darkly comedic, monster movie has never been presented better.

The Violent Shit Collection: 5 Film Set

                                                                    By MrParka
Synapse puts together a big box of shit for its fans, “The Violent Shit Collection: Five Film Collector’s Shitition”! This set includes the infamous German SOV splatter film series “Violent Shit”, “Violent Shit 2: Mother Hold My Hand”, “Violent Shit 3: Infantry of Doom”, and “Violent Shit 4.0: Karl the Butcher Vs Axe” also included is another splatter film from the director, “Zombie 90: Extreme Pestilence.” The director Andreas Schnaas has become one of the biggest names in the German Splatter world and for good reason, what he lacks in storytelling and finesse he makes up for in effects and bloodshed.
The first film of the series was released in 1989 eloquently entitled “Violent Shit” it starts off simple enough; a mental patient with a sordid childhood escapes and makes his way into the wilderness disemboweling and mutilating anyone he comes in contact with. Our killer seems to have an insatiable bloodlust and, in between the dozens of murders, has encounters with Satan, Jesus, and even manages to give birth via Immaculate Conception.  The dialogue is silly and painfully wretched; so much it becomes apparent that Andreas Schnaas is in on the joke.  The characters are worthless and are only there to die and even in its short running time it manages to stop for long periods of time just to introduce these random characters who will die minutes later. The film itself doesn’t look good, being that it was shot on video and poorly at that, but at least the aesthetic manages to help the films strong point… you guessed it, the gore. The effects are very cheap but abundant and at times clever.  It makes it hard to not acknowledge them.  All the staples of nasty splatter films are included such as genital mutilation, hacking, slashing, and disemboweling. So make sure you shut your brain off for this entry.
“Violent Shit 2: Mother Hold My Hand” follows the story of Karl the Butcher’s son who, with the help of his mother, begins his spree of murder and mayhem. “Violent Shit 2” manages to improve on everything from the first film; the set pieces, body count, and the gore is bigger and better.  A healthy amount of action is also incorporated into the story, keeping the pace a little bit more tolerable. “Violent Shit 2” has elements of crime and strange karate fight scenes which sets the tone for the whole film. A boring journalism angle ends up trying to tie the film together, but is mostly used for info dumps and padding; these scenes are the weakest of the film. When V2 gets its stride going, Karl Jr. seems to stumble from massacre to massacre, spouting off one-liners as he hooks testicles and ravages innocent morons, all done to the pleasure of his incestuous mother. V2 soon gets to an insane pace where our masked madman enters a construction site and happily kills a group of men who can’t seem to get out of the mud fast enough. The film comes to a violent end in a porn theater where squibs and splatter fill the screen in crummy detail.
“Violent Shit 3: Infantry of Doom” starts out with an unlucky trio of vacationers who end up washing ashore on an island that is ruled by Karl the Butcher and his ruthless army of goons and zombies. Quickly, one of our vacationers is dispatched, leaving our survivors to team up with an exiled soldier; the trio is then hunted mercilessly by the aforementioned forces. “Violent Shit 3: Infantry of Doom” is an insane romp mixing kung fu, zombies, and war films into one demented, gory, cheesy, ride that leaves you wanting to applaud and scratch your head at the same time.  The fight scenes are a blast with some inventive kills including a decapitated head with a blade sticking out of it spinning into someone’s back. When the grotesque Fulci like zombies appear a Fabio Frizzi type song sneaks into the soundtrack setting the stage for another bloodbath. By the end of the movie any gore fan will be satisfied, making the 3rd of the series the biggest and very best.
“Violent Shit 4.0: Karl the Butcher VS Axe” is set in the post-apocalyptic world where the sectors are divided between the gangs. Karl the Butcher is released from hell to kill a new threat, Axe. Soon enough the duo team up and decide to kill everyone else. We are given tons of exposition and the introductions of over the top characters, most of which don’t do much but die. Although Andreas is still having fun making the film, it doesn’t translate to the audience like parts 2 and 3 did so well. The first of the series to be spoken in English, it makes the lousy performances cringe worthy. It becomes embarrassing for the audience to watch and, unlike the shoddy yet funny introductions of cannon fodder in the previous films, these characters seem like they are bad Tarantino rip offs without any acting chops. A little blame can be put on the fact that the performers are not speaking their native tongue. The end of the film sports an all-out war with everyone who is still standing and, although it has moments of great gore and silliness, it also features poorly done digital effects. All and all it’s a shame to see the series go out on a low note after the steady climb it had. This title is the only one with special features, included are a teaser, trailer, premier footage (concert), and some behind the scenes.
The final film in the set is Andreas Schnaas second film “Zombie 90’: Extreme Pestilence” in its comedic dubbed version.  The story in “Zombie 90” is pretty thin; it follows a pair of scientists who attempt to stop a zombie outbreak. The gore in this one seems a step down from the previous aforementioned Violent Shit and the dubbing is so over the top and stupid that a second grader would have trouble at finding the humor in it. All and all it is amateur film making with a couple inspired gore moments that can’t justify watching it, even with its short runtime. Worth mentioning is an ending ripped directly from Fulci's “Zombie” as the living dead wander across a bridge. To accompany this shot is some narration, a bastardization of the iconic “Dawn of the Dead” quote. In “Zombie 90” it reads. “When the sun goes down and the dead walk, there will be no tomorrow.”

Surprisingly all the films are presented in widescreen which might be jarring for fans of some of the early films as they are not present in their OAR.  Anyone that does manage to stumble onto this set that isn’t aware of SOV will most likely junk it, but those hardcore gore and SOV fans will find it well worth checking out. Violent Shit 2 and 3 are well worth the price of admission alone.

Plot Summary:
In 1980s Germany, horror film censorship was a huge problem. The government rarely let classic horror films pass without severe cuts when they were released on home video. To combat this unfortunate situation many German horror fans scraped together a few bucks, rented video cameras & created their own ultra-violent, gory, splatter films. Arguably the most famous of these micro-budget German gorefests are the VIOLENT SHIT films from director Andreas Schnaas. Shot on standard definition video cameras, these films are a sight to behold. Although they are amateurishly made, choppily edited & loaded with ridiculous low-budget gore, these films have an undeniably offensive charm that has kept horror fans entertained for over 25 years!

We Are The Flesh (Arrow)

Blu-Ray - http://mvdshop.com/products/we-are-the-flesh-blu-ray
DVD      - http://mvdshop.com/products/we-are-the-flesh-dvd

A visionary and bizarre slice of Mexican arthouse cinema, We Are The Flesh is an extraordinary and unsettling film experience, a sexually charged and nightmarish journey into an otherworldly dimension of carnal desire and excess, as well as a powerful allegory on the corrupting power of human desire. A young brother and sister, roaming an apocalyptic city, take refuge in the dilapidated lair of a strange hermit. He puts them to work building a bizarre cavernous structure, where he acts out his insane and depraved fantasies. Trapped in this maddening womb-like world under his malign influence, they find themselves sinking into the realms of dark and forbidden behaviour. Mixing the graphic, powerful imagery of Gaspar Noe's Love and Enter The Void with the surreal, hallucinatory impact of Alejandro Jodorowsky, We Are The Flesh is a bizarre, psychedelic head trip, mixing intense, outrageously explicit imagery with a profound allegory on the nature of existence, to make this an unforgettable, boundary-pushing experience unlike anything you've ever seen.

Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box Limited Edition Trilogy

http://mvdshop.com/products/hellraiser-the-scarlet-box-limited-edition-trilogy-blu-ray

It will tear your soul apart! Limited to 10000 units.

Stephen King was once quoted as saying: "I have seen the future of horror... his name is Clive Barker." That future became reality when, in 1987, Barker unleashed his directorial debut Hellraiser - launching a hit franchise and creating an instant horror icon in the formidable figure of Pinhead. Barker's original Hellraiser, based on his novella The Hellbound Heart, follows Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) as she comes head-to-head with the Cenobites - demonic beings from another realm who are intent on reclaiming the soul of her deviant Uncle Frank. Picking up immediately after the events of the original Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II finds Kirsty detained at a psychiatric institute and under the care of Phillip Channard, a doctor who abuses his position to realise his own dark aims. In Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, a reporter investigating a mysterious death at a nightclub finds herself in the way of Pinhead and the Cenobites, who plan to bring their horrifying world into our own. Coming at a time when the genre was degenerating into self-parody, Hellraiser offered a fiercely unique vision that approached its horrors with a far greater degree of seriousness than many of its contemporaries.. Along with its sequels, the Barker-produced Hellbound and Hell on Earth, Arrow Video is proud to present some of the most terrifyingly original films in the history of horror in brand new 2K transfers.

The Orphan Killer

http://www.cavd.com/product.php?produ...

The Orphan Killer is a tour de force murder flick that defies classification. It goes far beyond current trends in gore and breaks open a new suffering genre of horror. Marcus Miller is a serial murderer hellbent on teaching his estranged sister Audrey what it means to have family loyalty. His lessons are taught in massive doses of vulgar and unimaginable pain. Throughout her brutal torture we learn that Marcus is not the only Miller with Killer in the bloodline as Audrey proves to be a formidable adversary.

Director: Matt Farnsworth

Cast: Diane Foster, David Bachhaus, Karen Young, James McCaffrey, Matt Farnsworth

Review by Mrparka

“Orphan Killer" is a mean spirited slasher film that follows the story and origin of a mistreated orphan out for revenge against the catholic organization who abused him. Marcus Miller, better known in the film as the titular character “Orphan Killer,” targets his younger sister who was adopted and moved onto a decent life.  Lucky for Marcus, his sister works at the orphanage, perfectly aligning with his revenge.

Let’s make no mistake about it, Orphan Killer’s main appeal and highlight is the gore. As far as modern day slashers are concerned, the red stuff flows heavy and the effects team uses some nice tricks. A prop screwdriver embedded into someone’s leg comes to mind. The soundtrack is pretty hard to remain uncritical towards, I personally am not a fan of metal music in films, and the score comes across as cringe worthy. The songs that blare during the chaos have the same style and rhetoric as our killer’s religious quips; these quips usually come before or after he hacks unlucky inhabitants of the film to pieces. These two points seem immature, even for a slasher, and are made worse when compared to the good effects and the few moments of solid camera work. The cinematography would suggest a higher production than most similar fair.  The cinematography showcases some nice framing, in particular when our killer lurks and attacks.  The ADR in the film makes some of the scenes unintentionally funny, a lot of the victims are dubbed and their mouths sync up poorly; in one scene, a nun throws her hands up in the air and yells about being quiet for fear of being killed. It would seem a lot of these characters are going out of their way to be murder victims. Our damsel in distress on the other hand does a solid job and carries her own weight with our madman, giving us someone to root for in a film that is mostly filled with meat to be sliced. At first glance someone might think a brother trying to kill his sister is too much like “Halloween” or that the whole religion creates monsters trope is a cheap cop out. I would mildly disagree with that sentiment; “Orphan Killer” is done with a little more finesse and style creating a rich history for our killer. We get glimpses into his legend being created and his current exploits without overdoing it or padding the runtime. The location plays nicely into the backstory and sets up some creepy moments and a scene inspired by “A Nightmare on Elm Street” with a young school girl jump roping. Finally, a slasher film would be hard to be complete without some T&A and “Orphan Killer” delivers, so you slasher fans can breathe now. That is, at least until the “Orphan Killer” rap plays over the credits and undoubtingly gets caught in your head.

The Orphan Killer DVD/Blu-Ray set is rounded out with a 90 minute behind the scenes, a couple trailers, and a music video. The behind the scenes includes some extra moments with the killer and a glimpse at the comic book. For fans of mean-spirited slasher films that don’t mind metal blaring throughout the film's runtime, they should enjoy “The Orphan Killer”.

In career that has encompassed such controversial classics as Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant and Welcome to New York, none of Abel Ferrara's films have quite managed to match the shock, extremity and downright notorious nature of The Driller Killer.

Ferrara plays struggling artist Reno, a man pushed to the edge by the economic realities of New York living in the late seventies and the No Wave band practising in the apartment below. His grip on reality soon begins to slip and he takes to stalking the streets with his power tool in search of prey...

Forget Taxi Driver, The Warriors and The New York Ripper, The Driller Killer is the definitive look at NYC's underbelly - a slasher that is as much at home in the arthouse as it is the grindhouse.
