    Sometimes a movie poster or title will catch my eye and it makes me want to review it.  While most of the films I review were sent my way just for that reason, I sometimes see something that I want to talk about even before I watch it.  Several months back Mike D here at Horror Society reviewed the horror short Beach Bro Bloodbath.  The title alone sold me on the film but I wasn't able to check it out right away.  I made note about it and as I was preparing for my annual October horror binge, I decided to go ahead and give it a quick spin.

     The film follows the local police who are investigating a string of murders.  All the victims are young men who were scene trying to pick up women on the beach.  Is it someone holding a grudge or is someone else responsible for the deaths?

     Beach Bro Bloodbath offers up exactly what you would expect from the title.  It's not a short that will be winning any awards of making the anyone's year end best of list but it's a lot of fun for a 15 minute short.  The acting in this one is a bit on the stiff side.  The film tries to cover up the cast's inexperience with humor but it's not able to do that much heavy lifting.  Some of the scenes are a bit awkward and the comedic performances are a bit much at time but it's not the worst acting I've seen in an indie horror short.  The story for this one is a bit predictable but is exactly as had hoped for.  We follow a several beach bros as they try to pick up women at the beach who then find themselves murdered by beach inspired weapons.  It's simple and effective especially for a horror short but a lot of the humor doesn't find it's mark.  It's a feminist horror story at it's core but it may not come across as that right away.  Finally, the short has a lot of blood but the no budget is evident in this regard.  The kills fit the theme of the film but they are not that memorable.  Overall, Beach Bro Bloodbath is a solid indie horror short that is a lot of fun especially if you are looking for some horror with a summer punch.  Check it out.  

Touch Me

     I fucking love weird movies.  I grew up watching the weird shit Moonbeam was releasing for kids and that really stuck with me.  I love oddball horror and will go out of my way to watch any that I cross paths with.  Case in point.  A few weeks back I received a press release for the sci-fi comedy inspired by b-horror movies of yesteryear titled Touch Me.  I immediately noticed that the film starred Olivia Taylor Dudley and Lou Taylor Pucci which made me very interested in the film.  Dudley was in one of my favorite horror films of recent years, Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls while Pucci made his mark on horror with his performance in 2013's Evil Dead.  

     The film follows Joey (Dudley) and her roommate Craig (Gavaris) who find themselves in a shitty situation when sewage begins spewing up from their shower drain.  Unable to pay the repairs, they find themselves at the generosity of one of Joey's lovers, Brian (Pucci), who is actually an alien who is able to control people's emotions with a single touch.  He seems to have it all, hired help that will do anything for him, a sprawling estate, and the secret touch that is other-worldly.  However, the longer they stay with them, the more Joey suspects that something nefarious is in the works and Brian has a more sinister plan than just pleasing humans.  

     Touch Me is nothing like I was expecting but I did enjoy it at times.  It was still odd but it's not as odd as the story could have been.  Honestly, I was expecting a bit more 90s sci-fi influence with some what the fuck moments but the movie we were given isn't all that bad.  The acting in this one was great.  Dudley and Gavaris are fantastic together. Their on screen chemistry carries every scene they are in.  With that being said, Pucci makes the film.  His performance had me in stitches and the random dance scenes are absolutely brilliant.  I really look forward to seeing him in more genre pieces.  The story for this one is more dramedy than anything but it does have a few horror elements and a lot of sci-fi.  The film itself does struggle with pacing and a lot of the scenes are not that consistent but I do enjoy the ride we are given.  Finally, the film has some practical effects and a lot of visuals.  Honestly, the visuals look great and enhance the scene while the practical effects are solid.  We get a lot of blood at times but the film does it in such a way that we are more concerned with the story itself instead of those scenes.  Overall, Touch Me is not something I would recommend to someone looking for a horror title.  However, if you want a horny sci-fi flick then this one is for you.  Check it out.  

Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon

     I tend to go against the grain, so to speak, when it comes to horror movies.  I often like the no budget backyard flicks with a ton of imagination and lack of resources over the bug budget films that lack imagination. However, there is a few movies that pop up from time to time that offer up a bigger budget than I'm used to and delivers.  Over a decade ago the Milo Cawthorne lead film Deathgasm was released on the world and immediately became a hit.  I've watched this one many times since it's release and always find myself glued to the screen like it was a first time watch.  A few weeks ago I received news that a sequel was getting released very soon so I reached out to Raven Banner to see if I could review it.  They were kind enough to send me a link for Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon.  I want to thank them for being so kind as to let me review the film before it's release.

     The film picks up many years after the events of the first film.  Brodie (Cawthorne) is struggling with his music career after two members of his band died the night he saved the world.  Unemployed and an alcoholic, he finds himself living with Giles after Medina (Crossman) left him to further her music career.  He decides to use the pages from the first film to resurrect his bandmates in hopes of winning a battle of the bands competition.  His spell works but they are unpredictable and their appetite for flesh is uncontrollable forcing Brodie to once again reverse the spell while trying to get Medina back.

     Sequels rarely live up to the original but Deathgasm 2 is a fantastic follow up to a film that that I've loved for sometime.  Is this review a bit biased?  Absolutely, but I'm still going to be as honest and fair as possible.  The acting in this one is great.  Most of the cast returned for this sequel a decade later and bring the same energy that made the first film so damn fun.  Cawthorne carries the film as the metal head turned reluctant hero while Crossman was not in the film as much as the original.  I assume it was due to her rates, scheduling, or something of that nature.  The entire film features some seriously fun acting with no weak links to be seen.  The story for this one is a rehashing of the first film but it still finds a way to mix it up a little.  We have music to summon his dead bandmates only for one of them to steal the pages and then they try to raise an army of the dead to take over the world.  It's equal parts Evil Dead and Stan vs. Evil which I'm here for.  While it does rehash a lot of the original story from the first film, it adds some new things that make it just as fun as the first.  Finally, the film has just as much blood and gore as the first films.  We have some seriously fantastic practical effects and a lot of severed penises, peeni, penis's, whatever the plural of peckers are.  The deaths are a lot of fun and these effects look absolutely amazing.  Overall, Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon is a worthy sequel to a film that I absolutely adore.  Metal, blood, and the undead is all I ever wanted and this movie, along with the original, delivers.  Check it out.  

Fungicide

     Many years ago I bought a 50 movie set of indie, no budget flicks.  Hell, I bought several of these sets because those are the kind of movies that I seriously love.  I couldn't tell you which set it was in but one of them had the 2002 horror comedy Fungicide from Suburban Sasquatch director Dave Wascavage.  I was still in college when I snagged this set and the first time I watched it I was absolutely hammered on confiscated alcohol that I had taken from my residents when I was an RA.  I remembered some kung-fu mushrooms and horrible visual effects but that was about it.  A few weeks back my friends over at Visual Vengeance sent me a copy of the film on blu for review.  Honestly, I was really excited to revisit it because it had been damn near 20 years since my original viewing.  This gave me the perfect excuse to check it out.  Once again I would like to thank Visual Vengeance for sending this one over for review!

      The film follows a wanna be scientist that works in his parent's basement.  His mother thinks he is working too hard and forces him to take a vacation.  In pure bad movie fashion, he takes a test tube full of his experiment fluid where he accidentally spills it in the grass turning the vegetation around his vacation home into mushroom monsters.  

     I'm a fan of the no budget masterpiece Suburban Sasquatch and I know that I had watched Fungicide in the past which made me really excited to check out this blu release.  Sadly, I didn't care for this one.  It has a lot of the elements that made Suburban Sasquatch so much fun but it wasn't able to duplicate the results.  The acting in this one is fun for the kind of film it is.  The cast consists of those with no on screen experience and some with very little experience.  The characters are all over the place ranging from high energy comical characters to more serious characters that feel out of place.  Those that watch enough no budget horror will know exactly what I mean.  The story for this one is a fun mash up of the science run amok, straight to video action of the mid-90s, and little creature features.  I really dig what they were trying to achieve but the film just doesn't have the humor that made Suburban Sasquatch so much fun.  Most of the scenes are dull with the exception of the bonkers fight scenes and random deaths.  Honestly, I wish more time was spent on just one aspect of the story instead of having everything as spread out as it was.  It would have helped with the pacing tremendously.  Finally, the film has some of the worst visual effects I have witnessed and some of the most creative no-budget practical effects I have ever seen.  The film really did use everything they had at their disposal which resulted in some unintentionally funny moments and no so memorable deaths.  A mushroom creature fighting people could have been so much more fun that what it was.  Overall, Fungicide is a movie that I thought I would be fully behind but found myself seriously struggling to finish it.  I hate writing a negative review for a movie I was sent but I'm just being honest.  I could recommend several other Visual Vengeance films over this title.  

Showdown in Secret City

     I love reviewing independent features.  I don't care if they are movies that I like or dislike.  It doesn't matter if it was made for a few dollars to just shy of a million.  All that matters to me is that they are made by someone passionate about the project and not just someone wanting to cash in on whatever trend is sweeping through the horror community at the time.  Watching an indie movie is an experience that I really enjoy even if the movie wasn't that great to me.  Sometime ago indie filmmaker Vinnie Vineyard contacted me to review several of his films.  The movies that I was lucky enough to review were hit or miss with me.  For every movie that I liked, there was one that just wasn't for me.  A few weeks back he reached out to review his newest film which is a sci-fi comedy titled Showdown in Secret City.  I wasn't able to get to it right away and I would like to apologize to Vinnie for the delay on the review.

     The film follows a small production company when they realize they signed over all their rights when they signed an agreement to have their films streaming in a different country.  Now they are forced to film a movie written entirely by AI.  They do as instructed for fear of losing their jobs and find themselves responsible for a box office hit.  Instead of celebrating, they quickly realize that the company they started for fun is long gone and they are just a cog in an AI machine.

     I knew absolutely nothing about this one prior to giving it a watch.  The title didn't really stir my imagination and the poster did absolutely nothing for me but the film's tagline really peaked my interest.  AI is a huge deal among the indie community and I was really curious to see what that had to do with the film.  The acting in this one is inconsistent but it's not bad.  Some of the scenes have some forced dialogue that is a bit awkward to sit through while other scenes feature a more relaxed cast that is able to deliver dialogue more naturally.  The scenes later on in the film is much more genuine and the cast does a much better job interacting with one another.  The story for this one takes some time to get moving but once it does it is surprisingly fun.  The beginning 20 or 30 minutes of the film made me think that I was about sit through another film like The Hike.  However, I stuck with it and the film did pick up substantially.  I loved the way AI was used in the story, the addition of the "porn and cats," and how people absolutely loved the film made with AI.  AI is controversial as hell but we all know how people, especially keyboard warriors, are hypocritical.  With all that being said, a lot of the humor didn't find it's mark.  I did chuckle at their AI representative going topless due to the amount of people that search for porn.  It was about the only funny moment that I found in the film.  Also, there is a documentary film crew "filming" the entire ordeal but they only appear randomly through the film and it doesn't really feel like the mockumentary I was expecting early on.  Finally, don't expect a film with memorable deaths or a lot of blood.  Instead, this is a sci-fi comedy that is light on the comedy.  It's satirical in nature but not catered to those of us that have a taste for the red stuff.  We don't really have any practical or visual effects to enjoy.  Overall, Showdown in Secret City is not what I was expecting at all.  I could blame my age and cynicism because I didn't find the movie funny but it was enjoyable for the most part.  It has a clever story that was fun but is not without some holes in the plot.  Check it out.  

Fun-Size Pieces of Sharp Candy: The Movie

     I've met some seriously talented filmmakers through Horror Society over the years.  Some of them are responsible for some of my favorite films that I've seen in the last 15 years while other created movies that are part of my go to lineup for various reasons.  These particular films mean a lot to me and I try to watch them as much as possible or, at least, once a year when I can.  Some years ago I befriended author and filmmaker Dylan R. Nix who was kind enough to send over his indie horror anthology Baron Von Laugho's Halloween Spook-A-Thon.  I've worked this one into my annual October horror binge every year since.  I've reviewed several other films from him, like The Demon of Serling and Sharp Candy, and I've really enjoyed them all.  Recently, Dylan reached out to me to review his new anthology Fun-Size Pieces of Sharp Candy: The Movie.  I wasn't able to get to it right away but as soon as I had the time I hit play on it.  I want to thank Dylan for sending this one over.

     The film follows Nix's character Baron von Laugho (Nix) has he once again takes us on a chilling journey through three horror tales.  The first involves a safe cracker who is tasked with opening an old safe for a small business unaware he was sealing his own fate.  The second story follows director Dylan R. Nix as he breaks the news to fans that the film failed to raise the funds needed to bring his vision to life before he receives a bit of fan mail in the shap of a doll in the Baron Von Laugho garb.  This awakens something sinister inside of him.  The final segment follows a movie critic who finds himself locked up with David E. McMahon who is drugged and dressed up as the Easter bunny.  

     Fun-Size Pieces of Sharp Candy: The Movie brings some of Nix's short stories to the Baron von Laugho universe which is something I fully support.  He is a huge fan of the genre and his films really demonstrate that.  Fun-Size was a solid anthology for the most part but like any indie production, there is a few aspects of the film that I didn't care for.  The acting in this one is a little underwhelming in a few scenes but is fairly well done for the most part.  Nix is at home as his Baron von Laugho character where he carries every scene he is in.  The supporting cat is a little inconsistent with some showing inexperience in front of the camera while others are very comfortable in their roles.  It's not poorly acted but there is a few awkward scenes.  The story for the segments are very uneven but finds a way to work in the end.  The bookend segment with Laugho telling horror tales actually works.  I enjoy it and could see this hold it over for several more sequels.  The first tale in this one is my favorite segment in the film.  It has a Tales from the Crypt style ending that you don't see coming and works very well.  The second segment is the weakest in the film for me.  I understand that this is more of a personal segment for the director when he was unable to raise the funds he needed to make the movie he wanted but it's out of place in the film and completely derails what could have been a solid psychologal horror segment.  The final segment is very middle of the road.  This Saw parody with the director taking his frustrations out on film critics with a drugged up horny David E. McMahon should have been the best thing ever filmmed by an indie director.  However, it's not as funny as it could have been.  It feels like it's trying a bit too hard and misses it's mark.  With all that being said,  some of Laugho's scenes were a little bit underwhelming due to some of the self-righteous dialogue.  It didn't fit the film and is a bit confusing.  Finally, the film doesn't really have the gruesome deaths that most genre fans are looking for.  The movie is very low budget and worked with what they had but money for practical effects were not in the cards.  However, we do have a pretty wild looking nutsack that looks like something James Bell may have crafted.  Overall, Fun-Sized Pieces of Sharp Candy: The Movie doesn't really hit like The Demon of Serling and Baron Von Laugho's Halloween Spook-A-Thon but it's a solid watch especially if you are a fan of Nix.  I fucking love horror anthologies and this one was worth a watch.  Check it out.  

Vampire Time Travelers

     I was raised on 80s and 90s vampire flicks.  I watched movies like Fright Night, The Lost Boys, My Best Friend is a Vampire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Children of the Night all the fucking time when I was growing up.  I absolutely fucking loved them and the release of Blade catapulted my love for vampire flicks.  Sadly, as time went on I found myself more interested in zombies and slashers instead of vampires.  Fast forward to a few years ago when a friend of mine on Facebook made a post talking about the late 90s vampire comedy Vampire Time Travelers and how the VHS he just got was his favorite movie in his collection.  The title peaked my interest but the artwork was lame as fuck so I had no interest in it.  Move to a few weeks back and Visual Vengeance announced that they would be release Vampire Time Travelers on blu.  I thought the title sounded familiar but couldn't remember why it was.  I shot them a message and they were kind enough to send a copy over for review.  It wasn't until I was watching it that I realized this was that movie and how much fun it actually was.  I want to thank MVD and Visual Vengeance for sending this one over!

     The film follows a group of girls pledging a sorority.  What they don't know is that this particular sorority stopped a vampire from taking over the world recently and her sister is hellbent on revenge.  Now she is going through the sorority one by one biting them on the ass and turning them into time traveling bloodsuckers.

      I had no idea what this movie was about going into it but the title gave me a pretty good idea that it would involve vampires and some time traveling.  However, it wasn't until I got to the scene with the butt biting that I realized that this was the same film my friend had bragged about on VHS.  I love stupid movies and this one is easily one of the dumbest movies I had ever seen.  It was so much fucking fun and I can't wait to recommend it to people looking for stupid movies to watch the next time they want to pop an edible.  The acting in this one is not that great but I kind of enjoyed that quality.  It added to the overall no budget look and feel of the film.  The characters are a lot of fun and the cast, regardless if they are experienced or not, do a lot to bring their characters to the screen.  We have a lot of fun scenes with this cast and they make the movie as funny as it is.  The story for this one is a bit of a mess but that's what I love about it.  The movie is actually a sequel to Sorority House Vampires which was something I just discovered as I was typing this review.  The info I could find on it according to imdb states that that both movies were made in 1998 and featured different filmmakers.  I didn't watch the first one and I was still able to enjoy this one.  Back to this film.  We have vampires, bloodthirsty record execs, bitchy sorority chicks, ass biting, and so much more in this one.  With that being said, it's the amount of simple one liners and puns that makes this film so fun.  This movie is everything I would expect from a mid-90s direct to video comedy but it's actually a late 90s no budget horror movie.  Finally, if you are looking for some fun effects and memorable deaths then you are shit out of luck.  We have some simple and cheap visual effects and some not so impressive make-up effects but that is the extent of that.  The movie focuses more on story and humor than it does the death scenes.  Overall, Vampire Time Travelers is easily my new favorite movie.  I will be adding something from this to my horror sleeve in the near future.  I highly recommend snagging a copy of this one soon from Visual Vengeance.  

Plankenstein

     I've seen a lot of movies over the years thanks to my connection with Horror Society.  I've seen some of the wildest films imaginable with movies featuring living placentas, murderous condoms, gay bikers that create a fight club, bigfoot with an STD, and so on.  A few weeks back I received a press release for the surfing slasher Plankenstein.  The film was released on Tubi and the team behind the indie horror film wanted to get the news out.  I shared it on the site and decided to add it to my watch list.  It looked fun and a movie that I could really enjoy.  

     The film follows a surfer, a cop, and the chief of police as they investigate a string of brutal murders along the beaches of popular surf spots.  

     I went into this expecting a lot of Frankenstein puns mixed with a lot of surfing.  Instead, what I was greeted with was a move that felt like it was intentionally trying to annoy you.  I made it maybe five minutes before I found myself wishing it would end.  I hate being that way especially for an indie movie but this one was one of the hardest films to finish that I've reviewed in sometime.  The acting in this one is very stiff at time with flat dialogue.  The cast seems to be having a lot of fun on set and that shows in a few scenes but the overall acting is fairly one dimensional.  The story for this one is a slasher meets island lore.  I was expecting more a Frankenstein story with a surfing theme but what we get is a slasher that doesn't really feel like one with some made up legend that doesn't really pull the viewer in.  The film feels like there is several decent enough ideas thrown out but none of them full builds up on them.  Honestly, a patchwork surf board killing tourists would have been a much more entertaining film than what we have here.  Finally, don't expect memorable deaths.  We have some prop body parts and some blood but that is the extent the practical effects.  We do have a few scenes with some horrible visual effects that stand out.  The deaths are not memorable or imaginative but they do make good use of the practical props.  Overall, Plankenstein is not the movie I was expecting.  In fact, it was damn near impossible to finish.  When I was putting my review together I saw a similar review on Letterboxd or imdb that said the film was "intentionally trying to piss off the viewer" and I somewhat agree with it.  I wanted to like it but it was all over the place and held together with chewed gum and cheap tape.  This is one you will want to skip.  

Amityvillenado

     The Amityville Horror did something that many other horror properties could do and that's spawn a series of unofficial sequels that are still popular to this day.  The original film and subsequent sequels are among some of the most popular genre films in history.  However, about 20 so odd years ago we started seeing films that had nothing to do with those films appear using the Amityville title.  These unofficial sequels are known for their outlandish stories and absurd titles.  While many genre fans watch them to see just how bad they truly are, I look forward to them because I truly love indie cinema.  A few weeks ago I was browsing an indie horror group on Facebook when I found a post talking about the horror comedy Amityvillenado making it's way to Tubi.  I fucking adore Tubi and quickly added the film to my watchlist.  I had originally planned on watching the film for fun while I was working on other review but I decided to write a review for it instead.  I was seriously impressed by the film and thought many other genre fans would be interested in it as well.

     The film follows two friends who are house sitting for the sister of one of them with plans of hitting up a concert nearby.  This just happens to be near the legendary home that spawned the Amityville legend.  It just happens that when they arrived in town, the iconic home was destroyed by a freak tornado.  As they try to get settled in and ready for their concert, more tornado sightings occur where those near them are left dead.  The police suspect that there is a serial killer on the loose but those in the loop know that something sinister was unleashed when the house was destroyed.

     I'll be honest.  I went into Amityvillenado expecting the worst and found myself actually enjoying it.  It's not a perfect film by any standards but it's entertaining for the most part.  The acting in this one is not bad but the characters are not likable at all.  It's almost as if the characters were written to be cliched in a funny way but they all come across as unlikeable.  The acting is solid for the most part but I wish some of the cast could have provided us with a character that didn't make me want to turn the movie off.  The story for this one pokes fun at some of the original Amityville sequels while giving us a no budget comedic tale that fits in nowhere among all the Amityville films.  I loved the idea behind the film with the Amityville house becoming so evil that is turns into tornadoes that kills.  Honestly, I really enjoyed this goofy story and how it played out.  My only real complaint about it is that very little time went into character development.  A "funny" guy that isn't funny and is always shitting, a dude that is a major buzzkill, many other unlikable characters drag a good bit of the fun down.  Finally, the film has some cheap visual effects that is not the worst I've seen but is still very noticeable.  I would have loved to see some great practical effects and memorable deaths but that wasn't in the cards with this one.  Overall, Amityvillenado is a goofy film all around and while the humor doesn't really find it's mark, the film itself is pretty fun.  I don't see myself revisiting it anytime soon but I will recommend it to someone looking for no budget fun.  Check it out.  

       

A Feast at Midnight

     A couple weeks ago I received The Eurocrpyt of Christopher Lee Volume 3 from my friends over at Severin Films.  At the time I thought that I had only seen one of the films in the set which actually turned out to be two films when I realized one was using an alternate title.

  Anyway, the one film that I had previously seen in this set was the 1994 family friendly kid's movie A Feast at Midnight.  This was previously released by Severin as part of their Severin Kids line where I bought a copy for my collection.  I liked the film but only watched it the one time before placing it on my shelf to collect dust.  I'm glad it was included in this set which gave me another reason to revisit it

**Spoiler Alert**     The film follows a young boy who is sent to a boarding school where he is immediately ostracized and mocked.  He is unable to make friends until he decides to turn his love of cooking into a late night meeting for his classmates.  He slowly starts building friendships with his class and the school nurse while sneaking around from the dean, an angry teacher, and a cook who refuses to let students in his kitchen. **Spoiler Alert**

     There is a lot to unpack with this movie but I honestly love it.  The artwork infuriates me but I get why it looks like that and the title is dumb but, once again, it fits the film.  I know many genre fans are going to be disappointed in it but I absolutely loved it.  

The acting in this one is great.  Christopher Lee once again gives us a larger than life character that I really enjoyed watching.  He really got into the role and made it his own.  The main cast consists of young boys with very little, if any, experience.  Yet, they were able to do a fantastic job together.  They made the film as fun as it was and it's a damn shame that many of them did not continue their careers in acting.  

The story for this one is not what I was expecting the first time I saw it.  The artwork and title makes you think that Christopher Lee is a monster snatching up students at night.  However, the artwork is referencing his nickname that the students call him behind his back while the title is obviously referencing the young boy's love of cooking for his classmates at night.  It's a family friendly story that I found to be very entertaining and still holds up after the second viewing.  

Finally, don't expect a film with a lot of effects and fun deaths.  This is a no budget kids film so we don't have any effects to enjoy.  Overall, A Feast at Midnight is not going to be the kind of film that many genre fans are going to love but I found myself having a lot of fun with it.  It's an amazing performance from Lee with the rest of the cast delivering unforgettable performances.  I highly recommend this one even if you don't have children.  

     

Sins of a Nympho

     I went into the Exorcismo set completely blind but I did have some assumptions after watching the documentary Exorcismo: The Transgressive Legacy of Clasificada "S."  I knew most of the films in the set were meant to push the boundaries of what would be allowed to be shown in cinema.  Considering the cover art for the set, I figured a good bit of the films were be horror or horror adjacent but I would be a fool if I didn't expect to see an erotic film or two.  Hell, every country has some sort of sexploitation to cash in on sex and it would only make sense that Spain would in the wake of Franco's death.  After watching a strange documentary about the changes Spain faced after Franco passed and a post-apocalyptic thriller with an angry blind mob, I was greeted with what I thought would be my first sexploitation film of the set.  This would be 1979's Sins of a Nympho.

      The film follows a conservative couple who finds is confronted by an older man.  He offers to pay them to attend a party.  They are reluctant to do so at first but decide to where they learn that the party is actually an orgy and the old man paying them is possibly a filmmaker wanting to film the sex acts.

     Sins of a Nympho is a strange film.  I was mostly expecting a sexploitation flick with too much nudity but what I found was a sex comedy with more sex than comedy.  I can see why this is included with the set but this one just wasn't for me.  The acting in this one is very one dimensional.  The characters are painfully cliched and the cast doesn't really deliver their lines with any sort of energy or conviction.  Sure, the nude scenes are more energetic but that is the only time.  The story for this one is somewhere between what we would have considered to be a sex comedy of the late 70s, similar to Porky's and King Frat, and the sexploitation films of the time.  The movie takes a little time to get going and by going I mean nudity.  We have very little in regards to story as we follow some very flat characters as they question if they should go to the party before eventually going.  The sex scene isn't that exciting and doesn't do enough heavy lifting for it's lack of story.  Finally, don't expect to see the red stuff in this one.  We get some skin and some awkward acting but that is the extent of it.  Overall, Sins of a Nympho is not what I was expecting.  Honestly, I believe the film was quickly shot to take advantage of the laxed restrictions that were placed on Spain's film industry following the death of Franco.  It's not a good movie but it's an important one.

The Priest

     I guess I've turned a corner on this box set as it seems like the last few films I've tossed in have not been horror.  I knew not all of these films would be horror but I'm shocked by the amount of documentaries that are included.  I love a good documentary so I don't mind that but it looks like we've reached the portion of the set where focus from horror may have shifted to other genres now that nudity and so on could be filmed.  After watching the sex comedy Sins of a Nympho, the next film in the set is another comedy of sorts.  This time it's the 1978 dramedy The Priest from Eloy de la Iglesia.  Iglesia is no stranger to Horror Society after I reviewed several of his films years ago that Severin also released on blu.  I was curious about this one once I realized he directed it.

     The film follows a priest, obviously, who has reached a point in his life where he is questioning his decision to become a man of the cloth.  He is starting to sexual desires that slowly start to take over his life.  He doesn't know what to do with these feelings at first so he turns to others in the church.  They offer up suggestions on how to deal with it but they are not helpful at all.  With his sexual tension rising, he starts to lust over a married woman who has an abusive husband.  

     I went into The Priest actually a little excited.  I had no idea what kind of film this was but I was hoping it would be better than Sins of a Nympho.  I got my wish because it was better but not by much.  It's not the most entertaining film but it was alright for a first time watch especially after watching a film that was damn near unwatchable.  The acting in this one is fucking fantastic.  Hell, it's about the only reason I was enjoyed it as much as I did.  Simon Adreau carries the film in my opinion.  While the supporting cast is fantastic and do a wonderful job at bringing to life many colorful characters, it's Adreau and his intensity that makes the film what it is.  The story for this one is one that speaks volumes when you say it out loud but watching it on film is like beating a dead horse.  We follow a priest who wants to get laid.  It's ALL he can think about and lets us know about it over and over again.  We do have a little bit of intrigue when he starts to fall for the married woman but that doesn't happen until later in the film.  I really wish we had more to the story than a horny priest and a battered wife.  Finally, this is purely a drama with some funny moments so don't expect a body count and memorable gore.  The film is purely a character piece and nothing else.  Overall, The Priest has a stellar cast and a story that should have been more enjoyable than it was.  It's very repetitive and doesn't give the viewer anything worthwhile.  I wanted to love it but couldn't get into it.  

Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon: The Holiday Leftovers Collection

     Holiday horror is a guilty pleasure for a lot of genre fans.  There is something entertaining about a horror film completely embracing the holiday theme with it's deaths and killer.  On the other side of the same coin, not all holiday themed horror and comedies are fun especially if they are half-hearted sequels released years, if not decades, after the original was released so they could cash in on the original's popularity.  A few weeks back I was sent two collections from my friend Addison Binek featuring episodes of his long running YouTube series Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon.  This second collection is consists of random episodes of holiday episodes that he was unable put in other collections.  Like always, I want to thank Addison for sending this one over for review!

     The series follows the dapper Addison as he shows clips from various films and then painstakingly makes puns about their shortcomings.  

     I love holiday horror and I've really enjoyed these collections from Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon.  His previous sets are great to toss in as those specific holidays approached.  However, this release, as fun as it is, doesn't really have a designated holiday you can associate it with.  These random episodes are entertaining but the fun of having a constant theme throughout is not there.  The acting in this one is exactly what you would expect from a no budget YouTube series where the star pretends to smoke a pipe.  It's fun in a stand up kind of way but don't expect something that will stick with you for years to come.  The themes for each episode is reflective of the film he is watching.  He does a great job at bringing us some humor to match the film while fully embracing his no budget production.  Finally, don't expect the smoothest edits or amazing transitions.  The show doesn't try to be polished and professional looking.  We have Addison sitting or standing in front of the camera as clips from various movies are cut into frame.  While crude, it works and is a lot of fun.  Overall, Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon: The Holiday Leftovers Collection is a great collection of episodes from an underrated YouTube series.  While they do get repetitive, I still enjoy watching them from time to time especially when Addison releases a new set.  Check it out if you dig cult cinema and indie productions.  It's a lot of fun.

     I'm a sucker for themed collections and shows that riff movies.  I didn't have a local horror host to watch growing up but I was fortunate enough to find episodes of Elvira's Movie Macabre when I was in high school.  What I had as a kid was Mystery Science Theater 3000 which I know wasn't the same as a horror host but I loved how both were people "watching" a movie and pointing out the unintentionally funny things they found.  While horror hosts seem to be more popular, I love finding shows or web-series that riff on movies.  Many years ago I befriended YouTuber Addison Binek who hosts a long running series called Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon.  I've reviewed several collections of his episodes since then and was lucky enough to get two more sets from him for review.  The first set I dug into was his Christmas Special collection.  Like always, I want to thank Addison for sending this one over. 

     In this collection we follow Addison as he watches several Christmas films ranging from cult classics to truly abysmal films.

     Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon: Christmas Special is not something I was expecting to review in March but it was still a lot of fun.  This is the kind of collection that you would toss on while you wrap presents or decorate the tree especially if you are in the mood for something you can turn your brain off for a bit and just watch.  It's a lot of fun and I know it will not be for everyone but I dig it for what it is.  The acting in this one is exactly what you get.  It's a one man show that plays out in a similar fashion to a comedy skit or the segments from Elvira's Movie Macabre.  Addison is just being Addison while delivering a lot of puns and mocking the films in question.  The themes for each episodes is reflective of the movie he is riffing.  Some of these films are must see films for genre fans while others are damn near impossible to watch.  Each episode fully embodies the themes of the films he is riffing which only adds to the Christmas theme.  Finally, this is a no budget production that has crude editing and camerawork.  With that being said, it knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to be anything but that.  It makes fun of movies for their shortcomings while showing their obvious shortcomings.  Overall, Movies to Watch on a Rainy Afternoon: Christmas Special is another solid collection of episodes from this long running and underrated YouTube series.  It's not for everyone, and while I have no idea who the target audience of this show is, I still enjoy it.  I recommend it but I know it won't be for everyone.  

Mulva: Demon Ass Kicker

       I don't know what I can say about Chris Seaver and his films that I haven't already said in previous review.  I've reviewed a lot of his movies over the years and really enjoyed most of them.  Hell, I still have fun with the few that I don't like.  His movies really is an experience that I recommend to anyone that grew up in the 80s or has the sense of humor of a teenager.  Sometime back I was surprised to learn that Seaver had wrapped on a sequel in 2023 to one of his earlier films.  The movie, Mulva: Demon Ass Kicker, was getting released through Makeflix but they seemed to be dragging their feet on it.  I started keeping an eye on Seaver's Instagram account and noted when the film was released.  At the time I wasn't able to snag a copy but kept an up with it until I could.  However, during that time the movie hit some streaming services and I was able to check it out on The B Stream.  I want to thank The B Stream for sending me a promo code so I could check them out!

     Mulva: Demon Ass Kicker follows Mulva (Naja) who is about to celebrate her birthday when she suspects that her friends are doing something special for her.  When she presses them further she learns that they are planning a Halloween party.  As she prepares for the party, two people she accidentally offended previously sets out to sabotage her.  They use an ancient book to summon a trio of sex demons who they promise can rape and kill everyone at the party.  However, that is no easy task when Mulva puts on her ass kicking boots.

     The first two Mulva films are not for everyone.  Hell, Demon Ass Kicker will not be for everyone but it's worth noting that the first two films and this one are very different in regards to look.  Seaver's films are known for making the best out of nothing.  His no budget films are meant for those that have fun with movies without needing the big budgets for effects and polish.  Not having a budget is why he masks everything with humor.  However, this sequel is leagues above the first two and may be one of my favorite films of his only second to The Weirdsies.  It was a lot of fun and easily one of the better shot films to come out of the Warlock Home Video camp.  The acting in this one is a lot of fun which is the first thing I expect from a Low Budget Pictures/Warlock Home Video/Midnight Kids Productions.  The characters always have a lot of energy and deliver some hilarious dialogue.  We have a lot of returning faces and the cast is always fun to watch regardless if they are brand new or genre legends with decades under their belts.  While on that same topic, Debbie Rochon who portrayed Mulva in the first sequel appears in the film as a different character.  She was solid as Mulva but I really enjoyed her more in her role here.  She has a lot of experience in front of the camera and easily slips into the style of characters Seaver is known for.  The story for this one is pure Warlock Home Video.  We have more sexual innuendos than you can shake your dick at while keeping the essence of Mulva there.  The sugar addicted surprisingly badass Mulva character still has all the quirky things that made her so memorable early on in Seaver's career while bringing in the trends that many of his fan has seen in his work over the last 10 or 15 years.  The set up for the story is not really that creative or imaginative but it's the characters, humor, and what happens once the party starts that makes the journey worth it.  Finally, the film has surprisingly better effects than almost every other film I've seen from Seaver.  While it's not a gory flick, the monster cocks and the gags associated with it look great.  The kills may not be the most brutal but they fit the film and are very memorable.  Overall, Mulva: Demon Ass Kicker is so much fucking fun especially if you have the mind of a teenager with a nudie mag hidden under your bed.  I know most of the horror community will turn their nose up to it but those of us not high on our own farts will truly appreciate the humor.  I highly recommend this one.  

Blood Barn

     My favorite horror films take place in a cabin deep in the woods.  Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead 1 and 2, almost every slasher I love, and so on.  It's the perfect set up for damn near any horror story so I'm instantly interested in a movie that uses this location for their film.  Several weeks ago I received the press release for the horror film Blood Barn.  This Screambox original looked like it had everything you need to have a good time.  It stars the absolutely gorgeous Chloe Cherry and the story looked like one that would be perfect for the cabin in the woods set up.  I reached out to them for a review link and they were kind enough to send one over!

     The film follows a young woman, Josie (Redford), who invites a group of "friends" to her family old farm that has long since been abandoned.  She is trying to impress them but finds herself on the business end of their jokes and bullying.  However, as things go on and it's evident that she will never fit in, things take a bloody turn.  Their presence at the old farmhouse has stirred up something sinister which is taking control of them one by one forcing the remaining few to fight for their lives.

     I was really looking forward to this one.  I love the title, poster, and synopsis that I read when I received the press release.  However, the day before I watched it I found a post in a horror group talking about it and comparing it to Evil Dead.  This only fueled my desire to check it out and I have to say that they were not wrong.  It does borrow some elements from one of the genre's best independent films but it has enough originality to be it's own thing.   The acting in this one is great.  I love how by the numbers the characters are.  They are extremely cliched but they embrace it.  The cast brings a lot of energy and charisma into their roles which makes the scenes a lot of fun.  The cast really gets into their roles and it shows.  The story for this one blends slasher elements with films like Demon Wind and Evil Dead.  I really liked the premise and how it made use of the "barn" even though it was clearly a house.  Regardless, it worked for the most part but a few of the scenes are a bit dialogue heavy with no real reason to them.  I don't know if these scenes were meant to get the most out of Chloe Cherry or what but they do make the film feel a lot longer than it actually is.  Finally, the film has a lot of blood but it's not as gory as I would have liked.  I really enjoyed the deaths for what they were and the effects we do get.  The make-up effects are great but some memorable gory moments would have made this movie an unforgettable experience.  Overall, Blood Barn was a lot of fun and reminded me a lot of the mid-80s possession movies like Evil Dead II and Demon Wind.  While it wasn't the most memorable film in regards to gore, it was still worth a watch.  Check it out.
