Genre - Comedy/Sci-Fi
Tagline - "Women want him for his wit.  The C.I.A. want him for his body.  All Nick wants is his molecules back"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

John Carpenter is a living legend not only in the world of horror but cinema altogether.  His films have went on to gain a cult following and many are considered classic by not just genre fans but movie lovers in general.  He has churned out fan favorites like Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, and In the Mouth of Madness.  In 1992 Carpenter worked with comedy legend Chevy Chase on the sci-fi comedy film Memoirs of an Invisible Man.  This is one of those films that I had never heard of before until I received the press release for Scream Factory's blu release.  I love Carpenter and Chevy Chase was a huge part of my childhood so I couldn't wait to check this one out.  Thank you Scream Factory for sending this one my way.
The film follows Nick Halloway (Chase) who is in a spa when a science lab in the same building malfunctions and explodes turning him invisible.  The C.I.A. investigates the explosion and discovers that Nick is invisible.  Agent Dafiv Jenkins (Neill) wants Nick and sees him as an invaluable asset to the agency but Nick refuses to cooperate and a manhunt for an invisible man is underway.

I went into this one with no idea as to what to expect.  This is a Scream Factory release but the film just didn't look like it was a title fit for the Scream aside from being directed by John Carpenter.    This sci-fi comedy is one of those  films I would have been obsessed with during the age of VHS.  I loved the story and the cast is amazing.  The cast in this one is fantastic.  As I stated earlier, I am a huge fan of Chevy Chase.  I know he is considered an asshole by those he has worked with but he has appeared in some of my favorite films and has delivered some unforgettable performances.  I loved his character and he did a fantastic job with it.  The same can be said about Sam Neill.  He's another actor that would rule my childhood with the 1993 film Jurassic Park.  He's one of the most underrated actors there is and he delivers a phenomenal performance here.  The supporting cast is great as well but I do have to say that I was never sold on Daryl Hanna.  Her character is extremely generic and she does very little to make her stand out.  The story for this one is a pretty standard story that we have seen before but with the invisible man angle applied.  The late 70s and 80s was full of films where someone has uncovered some special ability, serum, invention, and had to run from some sort of mysterious government agency for fear of it falling into the wrong hands.  This film mostly follows that formula except the protagonist just wants to be cured.  This was a fun take on an old story and it works.  Finally, if you want some blood and gore then you wont find it here.  There is some solid visual effects and classic camera tricks but that's the extent of it.  Overall, Memoirs of an Invisible Man is a fun and considerably odd film from a master of horror.  The movie has some laughs and an amazing cast.  I highly recommend checking out this release from Scream Factory.

The Seventh Sign

Starring - Demi Moore (Parasite, Beavis and Butthead Do America), Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Tomstone), and Jurgen Prochnow (In the Mouth of Madness, Judge Dredd)
Release Date - 1988
Genre - Horror
Tagline - "It was foretold there will be seven signs.  The seventh sign will be a woman.  Her hope is all we have left"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

Last month my family went through a house fire.  It was not a total loss but we did have a few rooms destroyed so now we are forced to live in boxes at my mother in laws.  The cramped house is not the perfect situation for a family of five.  I mostly play video games in my spare time but I can't now because my children are always on my lap or playing around in front of the television which is distracting.  Now all my time is centered around watching movies and getting reviews knocked out.  I decided recently to have a little Scream Factory marathon.  The first one in this mini marathon is the 1988 religious thriller The Seventh Sign starring Demi Moore.  This is a movie I've owned on several formats but never took the time to review.  Thank you Scream Factory for sending this one my way.
The film follows an expecting mother (Moore) and her husband as they await the arrival of their new addition.  Her husband is a lawyer and is representing a young man with Down Syndrome who killed his parents because he thought it was God's will.  Around the world natural phenomena is occurring like sea life dying and freezing in the middle east.  For extra income because she is unable to work they rent out a spare room to a man named David who is actually the second coming of Christ.  She suspects he is evil but once she starts investigating him she discovers who he really is and how a priest who is cursed to live forever is ushering in the apocalypse so he can finally die.
I knew The Seventh Sign was not my typical horror fan.  I'm not religious but I have crossed paths with religious thrillers before that were very good.  The Seventh Sign has it's problems but it was still a damn fun watch to say the least.  The acting in this one is hit or miss.  Demi Moore has never been an actress that I enjoyed.  She always looks surprised regardless of what the scene calls for.  When she is happy, sad, heartbroken, nauseous, or whatever she still looks surprised.  Almost like she wiped and her finger went through the toilet paper before each scene.  She is not that convincing to me and I get the feeling I'm not the only one to think that.  Michael Biehn was another performance I was disappointed with in the film.  His character Kyle Reese in The Terminator is easily my favorite character in any film.  I absolutely love that character and my son was almost named after him.  Sadly, he doesn't have the personality and charm in this film as he does in previous films.  With that being said, the secondary characters deliver the best performances starting with Jurgen Prochnow.  He is awesome in the role but the character does not get as much screen time as you would think.  The remaining cast is great as well.  The story for this one is a rather bold story that has a lot of potential but some of the more fun elements were not fully explored.  Following the pregnant woman is not that entertaining but if the film followed more of the seals then this film would have been unforgettable.  Finally, those of you wanting blood and gore will not find it here.  However, there is a few scenes featuring some very noticeable visual effects.  Overall, The Seventh Sign is a film that works but left so much to be desired.  It does have a promising story but some of the intriguing aspects are barely mentioned.  This film has no replay value but the blu from Scream Factory looks fantastic.

Overlord

When I was in elementary school I was an avid gamer.  The local video store had a huge selection of games so I was often renting games on Friday so I could play them all weekend.  I moved from the Sega Genesis to the Playstation One.  I had an uncle that was just a few years older than me so we would often game together. One game series we became obsessed with was the Medal of Honor series.  One of the secret characters in the game was a zombified Otto Frank.  Even though he never died during the Holocaust it was still an interesting concept to me at the time.  Nazis turning people to zombies was something I had become fascinated with and several horror films since then has been released.  Most are actually pretty damn good but they did not have big budgets to work with.  That changed recently when JJ Abrams produced the WW2 horror film Overlord.  This was a movie I wanted to see in theaters so fucking bad but work and life got the best of me.  Thankfully, when the film was released I was lucky enough to get a review copy.
The film follows a group of American soldiers tasked with shutting off a radio jammer before the soldiers hit the beach for D-Day.  They encounter heavy German forces and are forced to stop in a small village where they meet a young woman trying to protect herself and her little brother from the Nazis who are performing horrible experiments on the townsfolk.  The location for the radio jammer just happens to be the same location as the lab where the scientists has discovered a serum that will bring the dead back to life.  The group must not only fight Nazis to complete their mission but stop them from creating a super army of undead soldiers with enhanced strength and no sense of pain.
Overlord is a fun film and one of those movies you could really enjoy yourself with while in a theater but it wasn't the type of film I was expecting.  The trailer for the film painted a much more darker film full of reanimated corpses and gruesome kills.  Sadly, that was not the film we were given.  The acting in this one was great.  My favorite performance comes from Wyatt Russell.  His character was one of the more entertaining ones and he did an amazing job with it.  This is one man I can easily see following in his father's footsteps and portraying strong leads in horror and action films.  Jovan Adepo does a solid job as well but his character is one you don't really get behind.  He is awkward, shy, and reluctant to fight.  Viewers may find themselves wishing he would be the victim in a death scene but it never happens.  The supporting cast is great as well.  The bring so much to the table and make every scene entertaining.  The story for this one is mostly a war and horror take on Captain America: The First Avenger.  We follow a group of soldiers who try to stop a group of Nazis from creating a super serum for their soldiers.  This is the same as the last portion of Captain America where they try to stop Hydra from using the super serum that was injected into Cap from being used on Hydra soldiers.  With that being said, this film was more war than horror.  The first hour or so is a solid war drama before we take the dark turn.  I enjoyed both elements of the film but I feel the horror portion was underutilized and so many possibilities were missed.  Finally, this one has some amazing practical effects, some decent visual effects, and some not so great visual effects.  I really loved the practical effects that we got.  They were top notch and looked fantastic.  The film, also, has some solid visual effects but there was several scenes where the CGI was horrible.  It stuck out horribly and really brought the scene down.  Overall, Overlord is a surprisingly fun popcorn war drama with horror bringing up the last half of the film.  There is some missed opportunities but that doesn't take away from the film.  I would suggest checking this one out!

Genre - Horror

I was born in the mid 80s and grew up in the 90s but I was never a 90s slasher fan.  I really enjoyed the late 70s and 80s slashers but once we hit the meta-slasher phase of the sub-genre I found myself not interested and pushing more towards horror comedies and zombie flicks.  As I got older I found myself being a little more open minded to these films.  In 2008 for my birthday my wife bought me the Scream films on DVD.  This was my first time seeing them.  Honesty, I didn't mind them but they didn't have that charm that the classic slashers had.  With Valentine's Day approach Scream Factory is releasing the 2001 slasher Valentine on blu.  This is another one of those post-Scream slashers that I had never seen because the trailer painted it as a painfully boring late 90s slasher.  However, the artwork for the Scream release suckered me in.  I absolutely loved it.  I requested a copy and just got it in before the holiday.
The film follows a group of young women who are living their best lives.  Some are in struggling relationships, struggling to find someone, or jumping from man to man.  Their lives are interrupted when one them is found murdered and the initials JM start appearing on crude Valentines.  While the police investigate her murder the remaining friends quickly get back into the swing of things but they are start to fall one by one at the hands of a Cupid mask wearing killer with a grudge against them all.
I went into this expecting some late 90s/early 00s cheese and was greeted with something that tried so hard to be something it wasn't.  I love holiday slashers.  They are my weekness but this slasher wanted to keep the viewer on their toes as the film came to an end and failed miserably.  The acting in this one is actually pretty damn good.  I really loved the cast.  We have Katherine Heigl on top billing for this but she is only in the film for about 5 minutes which is 4 minutes and 59 seconds too long if you ask me.  With that being said, I really like the remainder of the cast.  They really get into their characters and deliver.  Granted, the characters are painfully plain but they did the best with what they were given.  The story for this one attempts to deliver that traditional slasher story formula where someone that was wronged comes back years later for revenge.  It almost works until the end when we get the killer "reveal" and then the killer "reveal."  this was shitty no matter how you slice it.  The film had me teetering on the edge of somewhat enjoying it and wasting my time and completely lost me in the last 20 minutes.  It almost feels rushed along with wanting to give something to the viewer that will blow their mind.  Instead, it results in a half assed attempt at a mindfuck.  Finally, the film has some impressive kills with solid practical effects and some laughable CGI.  The kills we get are mostly pretty brutal with some solid practical effects which is something I was not expecting.  Sadly, there is a few where horrible CGI was used and it was almost laughable.  It did not hold up well at all.  Overall, Valentine is a holiday slasher that fails for many reasons.  The story can't find a proper ending and the Valentine theme is where the story is set but the kills, aside from one, doesn't have anything to really do with the holiday.  Collectors would want this one for their collection featuring amazing artwork but this is one film I can't get behind.

I Still See You

Director - Scott Speer (Scream: The TV Series, Finding Carter)
Starring - Bella Thorne (The Babysitter, Amityville: The Awakening), Richard Harmon (Bates Motel, Grave Encounters 2), and Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns, Dirty Grandpa)
Release Date - 2018
Genre - Horror
Tagline - "What if your whole world was haunted?"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Most horror fans dislike theatrical releases.  I don't mean the everyday horror fan.  I'm talking about the dedicated horror fan that is constantly searching for that obscure or little known S.O.V. or underground horror flick.  I enjoy those flicks and the thrill of the hunt is what I am driven to with collecting horror but I sometimes like to break away from the shoestring budgets and recharge my batteries with a theatrical release.  Sure, they lack originality but I really enjoy the basic stories and cinematography.  A few weeks ago I was sent the horror thriller I Still See You on blu to review.  From my understanding this is a film that was adapted from the book.  I had never heard of it before but I was curious after checking out the trailer.  I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it.
The film follows a high school student Ronnie (Thorne) who is living in a world where the "memories" of loved ones live on after an explosion from an experimental piece of equipment killed thousands in Chicago including her father.  She finds a new ghost in her bathroom warning her to run.  She starts investigating who he is with a student in her school who is obsessed with the ghosts.  They suspect he is a killer who is now hunting her but soon discovers that he is warning her about her impending death at the hands of someone she trusts.
I honestly didn't know what to expect from this one but I was very surprised by how much I liked it.  I liked several aspects of the film but it did have several issues that prevented me from loving it.  The acting in this one is solid.  Bella Thorne didn't sell me on her character.  He blank faced stare throughout every scene was far from convincing.  However, Richard Harmon and Dermot Mulroney were both fantastic.  They got into every scene and made their characters really stand out.  The story for this one is fun for a popcorn thriller but there was a few holes in the story.  These holes are big enough to drive a semi through but if you just give the film a chance you can enjoy the world that it establishes.  It is a supernatural murder mystery but I still enjoyed it for what it is.  Finally, This film does have some solid visual effects but for those looking for blood and gore will not find it here.  I enjoyed the visuals that were given and one scene in particular was really cool to watch.  Overall, I Still See You is a fun watch that I could pair easily with Warm Bodies.  Both are light hearted horror flicks that are not for everyone.  Personally, I sometimes need a break from the blood and guts and films like this are great to check out before returning to the gritty world of no-budget horror flicks.

Found Footage 3D

Director - Steven DeGennaro (Star Formation, First Date)
Starring - Carter Roy (Narcos, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Chris O'Brien (The Weed Detective, Next of Kin), and Tom Saporito (Spermicide, Off Campus)
Release Date - 2016
Genre - Horror
Tagline - "A new dimension in terror"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

Found footage and I don't get along.  It's not that I hate the sub-genre but I don't find it difficult to sit through many of the films.  There has been a handful of found footage flicks that I really enjoyed.  When I was in high school I was obsessed with The Blair Witch Project and over the years one or two would pop up here and there that I really enjoyed but for the most part I tend to avoid them.  I despise their "natural" dialogue and the pacing of the scenes.  A few months back I was sent the 2016 found footage film Found Footage 3D on blu.  It looked interested and considering that one of the creators of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre produced it made me curious.  I was lucky enough to get a copy in for review.
The film follows a group of filmmakers who intend on making the first found footage film in 3D.  They find an isolated cabin in the woods that already the locals refuse to visit.  While filming their found footage film they start to encounter strange things until its too late and they are becoming part of the movie they are trying to create.
I try to give found footage films the benefit of the doubt but most of the time the horrible dialogue and slow paced scenes ruin it for me.  Found Footage 3D suffered from some of the worst interactions among characters I have seen yet.  The movie has a title that suggests that it doesn't take itself too seriously but the film definitely did.  The acting in this one is not consistent with the budget.  I typically review films made on just a few 100 dollars and, sadly, those had better acting than this one.  The cast struggled with finding their characters and their dialogue seems forced.  There is no conviction behind their dialogue and you don't feel the impact of the scene.  The story for this one is somewhat unique for a found footage film but nothing knew to horror.  There has been several dozens, if not hundreds, of horror films follow a group of filmmakers making a horror movie or documentary and get caught up in the lore itself.  Hell, that's the basis for the film that is credited as created the sub-genre itself.  Sadly, this film doesn't offer anything knew except they added the 3D gimmick to it which fails.  The film moves at a snails pace and really tries the viewer's patience.  Finally, if you want some blood and gore you wont find it here.  We get a little blood here and there but we do get several scenes full of horrible CGI.  The visual effects are some of the worst I've seen regardless of the budget.  Overall, Found Footage 3D was not for me.  This review should be taken with a grain of salt because this is a sub-genre I typically don't care for.  With that being said, I did not like it.  Skip it.

Maximum Overdrive

Director - Stephen King
Starring - Emilio Estevez (Young Guns, The Mighty Ducks), Pat Hingle (Batman, Sudden Impact), and Laura Harrington (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Quantum Leap)
Release Date - 1986
Genre - Horror/Sci-Fi
Tagline - "Stephen King's masterpiece of terror directed by the master himself"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

I love strange and weird movies.  I grew up on a healthy dose of John Waters, Tim Burton, and USA Up All Night.  When I discovered Troma it was game over.  Their weird, hilarious, and off beat horror flicks really appeal to people with a taste for trash like myself.  Almost all of these weird horror flicks are low to no budget because big production companies do not want to take a risk on a film that would flop at the box office.  In 1986 Stephen King would undertake one of the weirdest big budget flicks I have seen when he made his directorial debut.  This sci-fi horror film starring Emilio Estevez features a sound track from rock legends AC/DC and is one of the most bonkers story I have ever seen in a theatrical release.  As suspected it was panned by critics but I can't help but love this mother fucker.  Sometime back the film was released by Vestron Video on blu and I was lucky enough to get a review copy.
The film follows a truck stop owned by the greasy Hendershot (Hingle) who employees ex-cons so he can underpay them.  A comet is passing over and it has turned most electronics and vehicles into homicidal killing machines.  Those in the truck stop barricade themselves inside but they soon realize that they wont last long shacked up inside and must fight off an onslaught of killer semis, dozers, and military vehicles.
I can see why most movie goers disliked the film but as a fan of horror I absolutely loved it.  It had some great characters, some unforgettable moments, and the story has some solid pacing.  Honestly, as I sit here and type this I have to say that this is one of my favorite horror flicks and probably my favorite King adaptation.  After saying that I expect the comment section to fill up with comments about how I'm not a real horror fan.  If you want a good King adaptation then you get King to make it himself if you ask me.  I loved the acting in this one.  I forgot how great of an actor Estevez.  I know that many dislike him but I love him in almost every movie I've seen him in.  He's an amazing actor and his lack of emotions in this film really worked for his character.  He is a former criminal after all and most criminals detach themselves from their emotions.  I also really enjoyed Pat Hingle's performance as well.  His slimeball business owner character had to be written for him.  He seemed to be having fun with it and it showed in every scene.  The film is full of memorable characters and the cast does a great job at bringing those to life.  The story for this one is just so god damn fun.  The thought that our electronics and vehicles, the things we rely on daily, coming to life and killing us is down right terrifying.  There is several plot holes with this but for a late night horror flick it works very well.  The film keeps a good pacing and the action is evenly paced through out the film.  Finally, the film has several deaths with plenty of blood but gore hounds will not be happy.  The kills we get are what you would expect from killer semis along with some very bloody gun kills.  The practical effects we get are great but the visual effects are very outdated and stand out horribly.  They did not age well.  Overall, Maximum Overdrive is just a fun movie.  It does have it's faults but you can't help but love it.  I highly recommend grabbing the blu from Vestron Video.

Oasis of the Lost Girls

Director - Jose Jara (El Transexual)
Starring - Francoise Blanchard (The Living Dead Girl, Revenge in the House of Usher), Nadine Pascal (Zombie Lake, Caged Women), and Shirley Knight (The Panther Squad, White Cannibal Queen)
Release Date - 1982
Genre - Action/Crime
Format - DVD (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

I will always love horror but I still enjoy many other genres and their sub-genres.  After a horror binge I tend to check out some other flicks from other genres but they tend to fall under exploitation in one way or another.  After recently watching the bruceploitation flick Bruce's Deadly Fingers from VCI Entertainment I set my sights on the 1982 exploitation flick from Full Moon Entertainment.  They recently released Oasis of the Lost Girls that was original released under the title Police Destination Oasis which is a very misleading title.  I reached out to Full Moon and they were kind enough to send a review copy my way.  Thanks guys!
The film follows two young women who follow two men back to their apartment to party when they are drugged.  They soon find themselves shipped to an island to be sex workers.  While they plan on their escape there is a spy working to infiltrate the organization and save all the female slaves.
When I got news of Oasis of the Lost Girls from Full Moon I was ready for some sleaze.  People want to knock sleazy flicks but they are typically cheap entertainment with cheesy stories and often funny acting.  Sadly, Oasis of the Lost Girls is not one of those fun and sleazy exploitation films.  The acting in this one is solid for an early 80s exploitation flick.  The characters do not have the cheesy charm that you get from most of the 70s forced female labor or women in prison flicks.  They are extremely boring with very little redeeming qualities.  The story for this one is very predictable and seemingly takes everything entertaining from films like it and throws it out the window.  The sleaze and action is mostly removed and what we are given is a bastard form of the women in prison films that most exploitation films love.  The scenes drag on with little to no redeeming qualities about them.  Finally, this is not a bloody flick.  Hell, it's not even a sexy flick.  Overall, Oasis of the Lost Girls is a forgettable film that forget where it comes from.  This is one I would skip

Bruce's Deadly Fingers

Director - Joseph Kong (The Furious Killer, The Clones of Bruce Lee)
Starring - Bruce Le (Return of the Red Tiger, Enter Another Dragon), Michael Wai-Man Chan (The Lonely Killer, The Handcuff), and Nora Miao (Young Dragon, Naughty! Naughty!)
Release Date - 1976
Genre - Action
Tagline - "Now his whole body is lethal"
Format - Bluray (Personal Collection) (Screener)

Rating (out of 5):

Since the house fire I've had more time than usual.  I've focused most of that time on getting caught up on reviews and spending time with my family.  While going through the stuff that needed reviewed I noticed I had a bunch of VCI Entertainment blus that I completely forgot about.  After making my way through several horror flicks I decided to stop this marathon on the brucesploitation flick Bruce's Deadly Fingers.  After Bruce Lee rose to popularity the world started craving these Hong Kong based martial arts films.  After his death there was a rise of Bruce Lee impersonators and in 1976 an impersonator, Bruce Le, starred in Bruce's Deadly Fingers which was recently released on blu from VCI.  Thank you MVD for sending this one my way.
The film follows a martial arts expert (Le) as he tries to rescue his ex-girlfriend who was kidnapped by a kingpin and his kung fu goons. With the help of his friends, who are also martial artists, they must rescue her and retrieve the ancient book that can turn the practitioner into a deadly weapon just by using their fingers.

I love cheesy 70s and 80s films that you can't find everyday at Wal-Mart.    Some of my favorite movies are movies I've found for a few cents on VHS when video stores were closing.  These movies were hardly rented and skipped over by movie fans when they were picking through the video store's stock.  Bruce's Deadly Fingers is one of those kind of movies.  This is something that general movie goers would skip over but there is so much going on that you can't help and enjoy yourself.  The acting in this one is a ham sandwich.  The cast puts the acting to the back and their martial arts skills to the forefront.  This creates some very funny and action packed scenes.  The story for this one is nothing new in regards to the Hong Kong martial arts scenes of the early 70s.  Even by 76 this is a story that had already been the focus of several dozen martial arts films.  That doesn't make it bad it just makes it clichéd and cheesy...which is what I love.  Finally, if you want blood you will be disappointed.  However, if you want some relentless kung fu action that continues with no end in sight then you will enjoy it.  Overall, Bruce's Deadly Fingers is a fun kung fu flick for those that love 70s martial art flicks.  The action is a plenty and the story is something you have seen before but it is still fun.  Be sure to check it out on blu from VCI Entertainment.
