A week or so ago I received the press release for the new horror thriller At Night Comes Wolves. The title didn't sell me on the film but that fucking poster really peaked my interest. A few days later actress Colleen Elizabeth Miller reached out to me to review the film. I went ahead and watched the trailer and agreed to check it out. I was still in love with the poster and couldn't wait to dig into it. I want to thank Colleen for reaching out to Horror Society and myself to review this one.
The film follows Leah (Alves) who is in emotionally abusive marriage. Her husband belittles and objectifies her while harboring a dark secret. She goes above and beyond to satisfy her husband but she is always coming up short. Fed up with the way he treats her, Leah leaves where she meets a young woman who introduces her to Davey (Noel). He lives off the land and looks to the spiritual side of life. When Leah tells Davey about her husband he asks for her to take him to him because he suspects that they have a past together.
I was pretty excited to spin this one. The trailer didn't really excite me, as I stated earlier, but look how fucking amazing that poster it! It's an absolutely work of art. Sadly, the movie just wasn't my thing. If some of the things were changed around some I could find myself giving it another chance but how it is it's a tough one to finish. The acting in this one is amazing. The supporting cast is all fantastic. The characters are well written and the cast went above and beyond to get into their roles. They are absolutely amazing which helps with some of the scenes. With that being said, Gabi Alves is absolutely fantastic. She really gives this role her all and absolutely delivers. She's sexy at times, she's emotional at times, and she's strong at times. Her character roles with the story and her performance adapts with it. The story for this one has it's moments but it a bit confusing and chaotic. The film takes liberties with the story which does create a bit of a confusing scenario. If the story was told in a more linear style then it would have made the story a lot easier to digest. I feel like a lot of the story was left on the cutting room floor. I did, however, enjoy the way the ending went. It didn't really give the viewer closure but the undead aspect could have been a lot more fun than the actual film was. Finally, the film does have some blood in the later scenes but I enjoyed the practical and make-up effects. The film isn't gory but the ending does have some of the red stuff. Overall, At Night Comes Wolves is an anti-misogynist thriller that struggles with the story. I can truly appreciate the message they are trying to convey but they lost the story along the way. It has some moments so it's worth at least one watch but don't expect an amazing film.
