Rating (out of 5):
I grew up watching all genres of film.  I loved comedies, dramas, action, fantasy, adventure, horror.  I loved them all.  I was a typical child.  However, horror started to take root when I was in fourth grade and soon found myself consumed by it.  However, before then I remember watching so many films from other genres that starred John Travolta.  We had Look Who's Talking, Look Who's Talking Too, Pulp Fiction, Michael, Grease, Face/Off, and so many more.  He was a regular in my house growing up.  Once horror took over I didn't see him that much but one face I did see often was the talented Jamie Lee Curtis.  She is a living horror legend that has been in so many classics.  Back in 1985 the two met and would star in the workout film Perfect.  This film is the fourth and final film in the bluray set Sun, Sweat, and Sandals sent to me from Mill Creek Entertainment.
The film follows Rolling Stone reporter Adam (Travolta) who travels to California to interview a man who was arrested on drug trafficking.  He also wants to work in another article on health clubs and how people use them now to pick up dates instead of bars and the like.  His editor agrees and hes flies out.  He finds the perfect health club and quickly meets aerobics instructor Jessie (Curtis) who agrees to show him around but refuses to let him interview her.  She's polite to him but there is some animosity towards him for being a reporter.  They eventually start falling for each other.  He starts meeting other members of the club, as well as, some of the employees and starts building a personal relationship as well but once he is pulled from the story the editor and photographer takes stuff they have seen along with some of Adam's notes and makes their own story involving members of the club and Jessie's past.  On top of it all, Adam is now facing jail time over his interview with the drug trafficker.  He has to try to get Jessie back while facing jail time.
I'm going to be completely honest and admit that I was not looking forward to checking this one out.  Thought I like both Travolta and Curtis, this film did not look that fun and honestly did not look like it fit the whole beach vibe that this set had going for it.  The film did prove me wrong but was still out of place among the other films in this set.  The acting is great.  Travolta and Curtis fucking kill it in this one while their supporting cast knock it out of the park.  This film would be nowhere what it is now if anyone else would have been cast.  The pairing of the two looks stupid on paper but Travolta and Curtis work very well together and make the film what it is.  The story for this one is your typical romance comedy with some drama tossed in for good measure.  The film is cliched and follows the same formula that we have seen so many times before in a romance film.  People meet through usual causes before they fall in love.  Something major happens to split them up before they realize that they can't stand to be apart.  This story can be adapted to any situation but the fact it involves a Rolling Stone's journalist and an aerobics instructor does make it very unique.  Finally, the film does have some laughs but the main focus of the film is around the characters and the bonds the viewer has with them.  I would have loved more laughs but the comedy portion is very thin with the drama and romance taking center stage.  Overall, Perfect may have not been perfect but it was one of the better films in the Sun, Sweat, and Sandals set.  It was entertaining and had one hell of a cast.
