When I was in college there was a few horror flicks I would watch over and over again that most of my friends did not respect in the same ways as I did because most of them were not as avid a horror fan as I was. We would often get drunk and watch our go-to films. Most of the time we would watch O' Brother Where Art Thou, Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, and Black Dynamite. However, once they left or I found myself alone I would often watch the same two or three horror flicks over and over again. One of those films just happens to be Necroville which is co-directed by Richard Griffin and Billy Garberina. That film just has a charm about it that most modern horror flicks are unable to replicate. Several months back Camp Motion Pictures sent me the horror comedy I Heart U to review. I noticed on the cover the name Billy Garberina and I could not figure out for the life of me where I had heard that name before until one night I was getting some films together for review and it hit me. Once I realized who he was I had to move this film to the top of my review pile!
The film follows Liz and Walter Fletcher (Brown and Garberina). The two have been married for some time. Liz loves her life as a wife and chef. She loves preparing food for her husband Walter. However, Walter is in a slump doing the same routine day in and day out. To break away from the mundane he returns to murder. Before he was married, Walter used to kill women with lose morals. When news of the murders reaches his wife she decides to go back to her murderous ways of killing disrespectful men who take advantage of women. Her murders make the news and this forces Walter to step it up with his murders. This goes on for some time until Walter discovers that his wife is the one responsible for the murders and confronts her over it before revealing that he has been killing as well. He immediately assumes she slept with all the men she killed and she does the same about him and the women he killed. The two prepare to fight before they explain to each other they did not. This secures their marriage and the two start killing together.
My initial thought of I Heart U when I first received it was that it would be a tame horror flick with more comedy than horror. I appreciate these type of films where most people shy away from the camp. Once I realized that the film was directed by Garberina I knew the film would be a blast and it was nothing short of that. The acting in this one is solid by the entire cast with director Billy Garberina and his character Walter stealing every scene he is in. He plays an amazing socially awkward man who can be a cold and calculated killer. Raine does an amazing job as well going from being the perfect housewife to a sadistic killer. The supporting cast is great as well making the film flow perfectly. The story for this one is so fun and entertaining but it does get dry at times resulting in stale scenes. The film is able to balance the comedy and the horror. The film has laughs and then hits you with the bloodshed. Sadly, the film does remind me a lot of the Master of Horror episode Pick Me Up. The film followed two serial killers that killed members of the opposite sex because they sinned more or less. The MoH episode follows two serial killers that kill on their own set of rules that end up in each other's path. What makes I Heart U different is that it almost feels like a romantic comedy that you can watch with your significant other that normally does not like horror flicks. Finally, the film has a few on screen kills but they are nothing memorable or original. The film's main focus is to tell a story and entertain the viewer, not shower them with blood. Overall, I Heart U is a genuinely fun film for all the right reasons. If you are looking for a gore soaked flick then this one is not for you but if you are looking for something heaving on comedy and story then check it out!
