I love weird horror films that have unconventional stories.  Most horror fans want the same thing crammed down their throat so they can bitch and moan about originality being dead.  If these dumbasses would just look at the releases of companies like Vinegar Syndrome you would find some unique and entertaining horror and cult flicks.  Sometime ago they released the Roberta Findlay double feature with the two 1988 films Prime Evil and LurkersPrime Evil was a fun Satanic cult flick but Lurkers was surprisingly my favorite of the two films.  Thank you Vin Syn for sending this one my way.
The film follows a young woman who had a traumatizing childhood when her mother snapped and tried to kill her.  She still relives the horrible experience in her nightmares.  She has a very successful boyfriend and one night agrees to go with him to a party as his office that was recently remodeled.  What she doesn't know is that the office he just remodeled was once the very same apartment that her mom tried to kill her in and far more sinister forces are at play here.
I went into Lurkers expecting it to be the weaker of the two films but I absolutely fell in love with it.  The film had a weird story that I was not expecting and the effects we were given were amazing.  The acting in this one is far from perfect.  In fact, the acting was very bland for the most part but the characters were interesting enough to keep the story moving right along.  The cast struggled to find their footing and most of the scenes feels void of direction.  The story for this one is not something you see everyday in horror.  It does have that Carnival of Souls vibe but there is a huge spin on that.  I really liked how it unfolded and the final reveal.  It does drag on at times but still finds its mark.  Finally, this is not a bloody horror film.  There is blood but nothing drastic or gruesome.  With that being said, I loved the special effects we get.  The camera tricks and the way the damned look are fantastic.  Overall, Lurkers is one of those films that I wish I would have picked up at the video store as a kid.  The story is fun and the effects are awesome.  I highly recommend checking this one out.
