Who would have thought?  I recently tossed in the first two Annabelle movies and found myself not having a good time.  The movies are weak, predictable, and painfully boring to watch.  I love shitty movies but these two were just unimaginative.  The first film did have the cult angle I wish was further explored but that's about it in terms of story.  I love the main series in The Conjuring and The Nun was fun but flawed but these Annabelle films just feel like a cheap cash grab after the doll in the first film became a horror icon.  When I received a press release for Annabelle Comes Home I was on the fence about requesting a review copy but I broke down and did.  I went into this one expecting the same as the first two films but was surprised by how much better it was.
The film follows the Warren's daughter Judy (Grace) and her babysitter.  Her parents are away on business so the babysitter is tasked with taking care of her and prepare for her birthday.  The babysitter has a very nosey friend who invites herself in one day and finds a way into the Warren's paranormal room that is to remain locked.  She opens the case that his housing Annabelle and then shuts it again but not full latching the door.  Annabelle is able to escape along with several other benevolent spirits trapped in the room and wreak havoc on the three before they are able to lock them back in the room.
I went into all three Annabelle films with the mindset that I was watching another The Conjuring movie and the first two let me down.  The third, however, was a solid entry in the series and works just as well as another Conjuring film. The acting in this one is consistent with all the films in the universe.  The cast is fantastic but suffers from boring characters who lack personalities.  The Warren's themselves are extremely entertaining which is why I love the first two Conjuring films so much but they are only in the film for a few moments.  We need more interesting and intriguing characters in this series.  The cast has nothing to work with. The story for this one feels like an actual Conjuring sequel instead of one of the spin off films that lack imagination and depth.  This movie relied on the doll, the doll's history, and the supernatural presence of the doll instead of following someone ominously in a house for an hour trying to jump scare them.  I really enjoyed it but it does have several dry scenes that makes it a little rough to watch.  Finally, you will be disappointed if you are looking for blood.  This one focuses more on tension and atmosphere which is accomplishes.  The movie is very dark and brooding which works with the story.  The visual effects we get are better than the previous installments with some being better than most modern movies.  Overall, Annabelle Comes Home is a worth sequel to The Conjuring series and the best installment in the Annabelle series...which isn't saying much sadly.  If you like The Conjuring films then I highly recommend this one.  Check it out now!
