I absolutely fucking love stupid horror movies. The more absurd the better. My love for shitty movies has gained me a lot of hate in the horror community the last few years. When I review a stupid movie that I find fun my reviews often reflect that. Horror fans can't stand for someone to find joy in something they did not. Regardless of how people feel, I love what I love and refuse to change because someone wasn't loved enough as a child and takes it out on people on the internet. A few weeks ago I received a press release for the new horror flick The Drone. This movie looked just stupid enough to be enjoyable so I reached out and was able to get a review copy. I'm glad I did because I had a lot of fun with this one.
The film follows a young couple who just bought a new home and move in. While unpacking they find a drone in the trash and bring it in. What they don't know is that the drone has the soul of a serial killer trapped in it after he was accidentally hit by lighting. The drone spies on the couple and then tries to frame the husband for murder after it kills the foxy neighbor. They suspect something is wrong with the drone and hire a private investigator to do some investigating. They uncover who the drone belonged to and how the spirit of the killer is using it to add more to his body count.
I honestly didn't know what I was getting myself into when I tossed this one in. Most of these horror films centered around modern technology often ends in the most cringe worthy fashion. They are so focused on being relevant that they find themselves making a movie that is outdated before it's official release. The Drone will most definitely not be relevant in the coming years and will most likely find itself in a bargain bin somewhere but that doesn't make it a bad film. Hell, I had some fun with it and several laughs were had. The acting in this one is extremely dramatic and so serious it almost feels like a parody film. The cast was difficult to get used to at first but as the movie progressed I found myself really liking the two leads. Their characters are a little difficult to like but I think that was intentional. The supporting cast is more of the same. Extremely serious characters in a goofy situation. The story for this one is so ridiculous that you know before hand that the film is going to deliver some unintentional laughs. It did but I found myself really enjoying the absurdity of it. Its a fucking serial killer trapped in a drone. Don't expect another American Psycho. Just go with it. Finally, the film does have a few death scenes but they heavily rely on CGI that is far from perfect. The blood looks so goofy but the gags are funny in a Sy-Fy Channel shark movie kind of way. It's bloody but don't expect practical effects. Overall, The Drone is far from perfect but you can't deny the entertainment it will provide. Stupid fun at it's finest. Check it out now!
