Rating (out of 5):
I hate when I get stuff in for review and I don't like them. I really hate writing negative reviews for films people send me but I promised myself I would always be honest and respectful when I started writing for Horror Society. Wild Eye is one of my favorite indie distribution companies. I collect all their releases but from time to time they do release something I don't care for. That doesn't make these movies bad but they just aren't for me. It seems like my latest Wild Eye marathon wielded a few that I didn't care for. My last film in this movie binge is the 2017 horror film Southern Chillers. I once again want to thank Wild Eye for sending this one my way.
I get a lot of movies in for review but it's not often that I get one in that just leaves me bewildered. However, Southern Chillers is one of the few that left me scratching my head. I don't know if some changes had to be made on the fly or some of the important bits was left on the cutting floor but this is one film that I seriously struggled with to finish. The acting in this one is so so. Some of the cast was really into their role and went above and beyond to make their scenes memorable. Sadly, a good portion of the cast delivers their dialogue with very little enthusiasm. The scenes are very dry and leave no impact on the story. The story, or stories, for this one feels like they are just tossed together with very little connection. If you look away just for a second you will find yourself lost. Hell, if you pay close attention you will still find yourself lost. The story, along with the editing, makes this one a really tough one to sit through. Finally, the film has several death but the practical effects are very minimal. This is typical for a no budget indie production. Overall, Southern Chillers has an interesting premise but the finished product leaves much to be desired. This is one of the few Wild Eye releases that I can't recommend.
