Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski are filmmakers that never cease to amaze me. Father's Day is one of my favorite films in my collection and the special edition bluray from Troma is one of my most prized possessions. It's a film I watch several times a year. Aside from Father's Day, Kostanski also directed the 80s action/sci-fi tribute film Manborg which is another favorite in my collection. Their work with Astron-6 has been amazing so when I heard they were once again teaming up for The Void I had to follow it closely. When I saw the film was getting close to a release date I reached out to Diabolik DVD who I had heard was handling the release for this one in one capacity or another. They were kind enough to send a review copy of the film on blu my way. Thanks guys.
The film follows a small town cop who happens across a man in a bad way and takes him to the hospital where his wife works. As soon as he arrives he notices that he no longer has radio signal and strange men dressed in white cloaks are surrounding the hospital. As things start to come unglued in the hospital two men wielding guns arrive and tells the cop that they are hunting the man he tried to save because he was connected to a bloodbath nearby. That is when the real shit hits the fan and they learn that the doctor in charge has been performing crude experiments and practicing the occult to bring back his dead daughter only to release deadly creatures that are in so much pain they only want death in his pursuit to reach The Void.
Before I was able to check out The Void I had heard a lot of praise for it from others who watched it when it premiered on VOD. I knew my review was going to be positive but exactly how positive would it be? Pretty fucking positive! The acting in this one is fucking fantastic. Every character is brought to life by the cast. Unlike most of the other films associated with Gillespie and Kostanski where we have characters that stand out, this film consists of characters that all work well with each other without overshadowing one another. The story for this one is fantastic. It feels like a fan of John Carpenter's The Thing was hooked on the work of H.P. Lovecraft. The film starts off a little too slow but more than makes up for it as the movie progresses and goes out with a fucking bang. It is a well written film that builds with tension and cinematic shocks. Finally, this is a bloody fucking film. The film has a couple graphic kills but the true testament to practical effects is the creatures. The creatures are outstanding and are really nightmare inducing. Overall, The Void is a horror film for horror fans by horror fans. The movie hits all the right notes and delivers the goods unlike most of the horror films being pumped out by big budget studios. Check it out.
