Shudder hasn't let me down often over the last few years. In fact, I've been so impressed by their originals and exclusive releases that I signed up for Shudder so I could check out some of their other flicks. However, I'm still a movie collector and when I see something I like I add it to my inventory. When I made my last trip to Walmart when I picked up Voodoo Apocalypse and Evil Takes Root I saw a few Shudder releases on the shelves. I went ahead and picked them up as well. After watching the abysmal Evil Takes Root I decided to toss in the Shudder release of Blood Quantum. I had heard other genre fans talk about how good it was and I can see why. It was very entertaining.
The film follows a group of survivors living on the Red Crow reservation who seem to be immune to an infection that has been turning those infected into flesh eating zombies. While trying to fend off the walking dead they have to work together but the group starts falling apart and some of them sabatoge them forcing the survivors to choose sides.
This is one that I've seen many talk about this month and I'm glad I pulled the trigger on picking the DVD up of this because it was a lot of fun. I've recently had the urge to check out some zombie flicks and this one really satisfied. It was a well made zombie flick that hit the spot. I know I've recently bitched about the abundance of Walking Dead clones on store shelves but I still love this sub-genre. The acting in this one is great. You really get behind the characters and want them all to survive but it wouldn't be a good zombie film is they did. The cast really does a great job and they do a great job at delivering a wide range of emotions. The story for this one is a straight forward zombie tale but the incorporation of the indigenous people takes it to a new level. Having them immune to the infection made this one stand out. When you add that with the well developed characters and fast pacing story you get an unforgettable zombie flick. It doesn't reinvent the sub-genre but builds upon it. Finally, this is another bloody entry into an already gruesome sub-genre. The film has several good and gory deaths that make great use of practical effects. The undead have great make-up as well which makes this one a step above most of the cheap zombie flicks you can find everywhere. Overall, Blood Quantum is a fantastic horror film and an even more impressive zombie flick. If you are looking for something new to watch this Halloween season then I highly suggest giving this one your time. It will be time well spent, trust me.
