I love when a director does not set out to entertain the masses but sets out to actually make a movie he would enjoy watching themself. Very few directors do this but I believe the state of indie cinema would be booming if they did.  You can tell when you watch a film if the director gave it his all instead of just throwing a shitty film together to make a quick buck.  That brings me to the fucking outlandish dark comedy flick Frankie in Blunderland directed by Caleb Emerson who is known for directing the equally as crazy horror flick Die You Zombie Bastards.  I knew nothing of this flick before being sent this to review by the fine folks over at Brain Damage Films and Midnight Releasing.  After a recommendation by a horror minded friend I had to check it out.
The film follows the timid Frankie (Pistol) who lives with his abusive wife Katie (Martin) and reluctant roommate Tommy (Hundley).  Tommy moved in with them a few years ago and never left and this has put a strain on Frankie and Katie. To make matters worse, Tommy is in love with Katie and will stop at nothing to make her his own.  One day a fight breaks out between Katie and Tommy.  While in the midst of fighting Tommy hits Katie with a frying pan sending her and Tommy to the ground.  Frankie thinks he killed them both and panics.  He leaves the room and moments later Tommy awakens.  He then spots Katie on the floor and kidnaps her because she too is not dead.  When Frankie finally returns he finds the two gone and his world is turned upside as he searches for Tommy the freeloader and his bitch of a wife.
I love it when I start watching a film that I have no knowledge of and it completely blows me away.  That is what Frankie in Blunderland did.  I knew nothing about the film other than the artwork warned of a psychedelic journey.  No words that I type will do this film justice because this film is so out there.  The acting in this one is pretty amateurish which is not surprising since the lead (Tommy Pistol) is mostly known for his pornographic work.  The rest of the cast did not do that great of a job either but with this type of film it did not take away from it.  The story is not something new to cinema but it is an original take on a story already told.  To be honest, it felt like I was watching a dark comedy adaption of Dude, Where's My Car...which this film was loads better than that flick.  The film was intended to be fun and ridiculous and it surely succeeds.  Finally, those looking for great special effects and on-screen kills will not find them here.  However, if your looking for a funny off-the-wall flick that makes no fucking sense then look no further.  This film is crazy and fun.  I highly recommend it.
