When it comes to horror you never know what you will come across.  I am always searching for new movies to review either by randomly clicking on amazon.com or jumping from page to page on Facebook.  However, the best place to get unheard movies is by just checking the Horror Society Facebook page.  Many directors have reached out to the page looking for someone to take a look at their film and I am always open to check them out.  A few days back director J.R. McGarrity did just that and I was more than happy to take a look at it.  He was nice enough to send me a copy and for that I want to say thank you.
The film follows apartment manager Gus (Blanton) who has one of the worst jobs I have ever witnessed in a film.  The landlord Wang (Jung) is an old asshole that is always pushing Gus to the limit.  On top of that Gus has to deal with a real blonde bitch that wants his job and is trying to sabotage him.  Finally, the apartment building has witnessed two deaths in just a matter of days.  While Gus is cleaning out the deceased tenants rooms he discovered a large collection of vampire books and it concerned him.  The situation becomes even more concerning when a young couple keep appearing at 3 a.m. every morning.  Wang wants the deceased tenant's rooms rented immediately so Gus rents to them after several nights of attempting.  As Gus starts to investigate the vampire books and the recent deaths he slowly starts to unravel a conspiracy involving not only himself but his dead partner and the living dead.
I have watched a lot of vampire movies in my life and my favorites are those made in the 70s and 80s.  Any Hammer vampire film including the Dracula series, The Lost Boys, Fright Night are just some to name a few.  I just really love the sets and atmosphere of those made in the 70s and the pop culture of those made in the 80s.  The 90s had a hand full of good vampire flicks but they don't have any real distinguishing qualities like the other decades.  However, there are a few great indie vampire films made since the turn of the century.  These films are great and that is because they mix humor with the age old vampire tale to make something truly entertaining.  The movie that comes to mind when I talk about this is Blood on the Highway and I absolutely love that film.  That is what I really liked about this movie.  The movie is a great mixture of comedy, whether intentional or unintentional, and horror.  Also, this movie doesn't take itself too seriously.  Director McGarrity knew he was making an indie film and did not set out to try to reinvent the wheel but instead tried to deliver something simple and fun.  The acting is actually good by the entire cast, however, lead actor Blanton definitely has a volume problem.  In almost every scene he is in I feel like he is screaming at me the whole time.  I understand his character is constantly under stress and is frustrated but it just felt like he is scalding the viewer like a step-parent.  The story is nothing really new nor groundbreaking but it is fun as hell and very detailed.  This, also, once again shows that simple can and will go a log way.  Finally, the film has your typical vampire attacks and the special effects associated with those.  However, unlike like most vampire films this one has a pretty good amount of gore.  Most vampire films rarely use gore to wow the audience.  Instead, their kills are just typical bite wounds on the neck and buckets of blood.  Very few vampire films have the balls to throw in some gore and this one did just that.  Overall, this film is amazing.  This film has attitude, blood, gore, and beautiful ladies.  What more do you want?  I highly recommend it.
