A few months back I was at Wal-Mart and saw the blu release of the slasher flick The Drownsman.  I was really interested in checking it out and reached out to Anchor Bay and they were kind enough to send me a review.  The film had a great killer and some amazing camera work and imagery along with some great practical effects but really did not capture my full attention and hold it there.  The story was lacking.  Jump to a few days ago and I was browsing Facebook when I came across an article about a movie that was screening and several audience members became ill from the visuals and actually threw up or passed out from the disgusting visions they saw.  The movie they were referring to was Bite which was directed by the same director behind The Drownsman. I had to see this disgusting film and reached out to the film's Facebook page.  They were nice enough to send me a review link.  Thanks so much for letting me check this one out!
The film follows a group of girls in Costa Rica for a bachelorette party.  They drink it up, have a little sex and then go swimming in a tropical wonderland when the bachelorette is bitten by something in the water.  They laugh about it because everyone gets bitten by bugs... When the girls return home the young lady remembers that she does not want to get married and to make matters worse, her bug bite has become infected.  He body then begins to change slowly.  She starts to distance herself from her fiance but her carnal desires get the best of her and she lets her man lay the pipe to her before her changing body wins and she becomes ill.  Now, she is changing with her pores spewing ooze and she inadvertently infects her fiance who is now pissing blood.  Her soon to be mother-in-law pays her a visit but she is too far gone and kills her and places her body in the bathroom before turning her home into a nest to lay her eggs. Her friend shows up to check on her and she stings her rendering her unconscious and ties her up.  Her fiance shows up just in time to watch her slit the young woman's throat.  The two fight and he is able to stop her but he is wounded badly.  The police arrive sometime later and find that he is still alive but infected with the bug.
When I first watched The Drownsman I was very impressed by the quality of the film just let down by the bland story that combined elements of Saw and A Nightmare on Elm St.  When I read that Bite was causing people to vomit I was not surprised when I discovered that Chad Archibald was behind it.  The practical effects and imagery in TDM was top notch but I was concerned that this would be a gross-out flick with no story. Lucky for us, we do get a decent story and the sick factor is definitely there!  The acting in this one is great by the entire cast.  Our leads are sexy, talented, and work so well with each other.  There is not many films out there where the cast work so well together that they can actually pull the catty friendship off like so many women and their friends do in the real world.  Elma Begovic is a true star in her role as well.  She has a role that demands a lot and she gave it all.  Her character demands so much emotion in order for her to feel real and she is able to bring it all out.  You believe her when she is distraught, in pain, and when she transforms you utterly believe she will kill you.  The story for this one is one we have seen before but never in this gross detail.  There has been so many films where someone has been bitten or infected with something and transform into something nasty but none actually deliver on the nasty and follow the story all the way through like this one does.  Finally, the film does have a few on screen kills but they are rather lackluster.  They are nothing special and the film makes quick work of it so we don't really get to enjoy them.  With that being said, the film's praise is the sickness of the film and not the kills.  The bride to be's changing body is disgusting with all the muck and ooze dripping off of her along with her crude nest and acid she spits from her mouth.  This is where the film brings out the vomit.  Sadly, this is not the nastiest film I have seen and could name several that are nastier but the film does accomplish more than these other films do and that's entertainment.  Overall, Bite is a film you will not want to miss.  It is fucking nasty and entertaining.  Check this one out but bring a puke bucket if you are a light weight horror fan!
