Rating (out of 5):

I absolutely love indie horror.  I started writing reviews to cover exploitation and forgotten action films but my love for horror quickly took over.  I love when I get in some no budget indie horror films to review because most of the time these films were made by fans of the genre.  They work hard to make the movies they want to see.  Sometime ago I befriended indie filmmaker Seb Godin on Facebook and since then I've reviewed several of his movies.  His movies are always wide and he takes risks with each of his films.  When Wild Eye announced that they would be releasing his film Ouija Mummy I had to see it.  I reached out to MVD and they were kind enough to send a review copy my way.
The film follows a young couple who are having a house warming party for the new home they just moved into.  They invite some old friends over for a little get together along with his estranged brother to bury the hatchet.  An amulet that was recently gifted to the young woman from her boyfriend is actually the amulet of an Egeyptian goddess and when they play with an Ouija board they find themselves fighting for their lives when the goddess inhabits the young woman.
Godin has an eye for films from yesteryear.  All his movies have their own look about them.  The lighting is always perfect and his cinematography is always spot on.  When you combine that with practical effects and stories like Lycanimator and DinoGore then you can expect to see something you wouldn't find from other filmmakers.  He does take risks with his films and I respect that.  He doesn't follow trends and makes the movies that he would want to see.  Ouija Mummy was a gamble and I feel that this gamble paid off.  It is rough around the edges and at an hour in length the story is a little too long but it works.  I enjoyed it.  The acting in this one is solid but some of the scenes do get a little awkward at times.  The cast works pretty well together but their dialogue and pitch of their voice does get a weird.  It's a little inconsistent but nothing bad.  The cast looks like they were having fun on set and it translates well to the film.  The story for this one is extremely simple and effective but the movie itself takes awhile to get moving.  It's around an hour long but almost 40 minutes of it is heavy dialogue and character developement.  Realistically, the movie could be trimmed to around 30 or so minutes and it would have a bigger impact on the viewer.  With that being said, it is still a fun watch but you have a big hill to climb before you get to the top.  Finally, we get some really fun death scenes with some practical effects.  The effects are far from perfect but they work with the kills to make them as enjoyable as possible.  Overall, Ouija Mummy will not be for everyone.  In fact, if you are the kind of movie fan that enjoyed well polished horror flicks then you will not enjoy this one.  However, if you like the outlandish side of cinema and have any sort of a sense of humor then you will really enjoy this one.  I had fun with it and I know some of you will as well.
