After a month long stint away from horror it is great to be back to the greatest genre in cinematic history.  I love all horror but one of my favorite types of horror flicks is horror comedies.  I grew up on horror comedies and will usually go out of the way to check one out in hopes of seeing the next Dead Alive.  Last month I was sent a press release for the horror comedy OMG...We're in a Horror Movie.  The film looked fun and I wanted to check it out so I put it on my watch list for this month to check out.  As soon as I had the time and was back home from a business trip I tossed it on the screen and gave it a go.
The film follows a group of twenty-somethings who are spending the evening playing some table top games.  However, things turn from fun to deadly when they learn that they have been tossed into a horror movie.  They quickly start determining their role in the film and turn to horror cliches.  This leads to some confusion among the group where they try to reverse their roles by sleeping with each other and acting out scenes from Shakespeare plays.  However, this does not stop the real horror from unfolding when they start dying one by one.  Some die from dildos while others are stabbed resulting in the murdered to come back as zombies.
I had a lot of hope for OMG...We're in a Horror Movie but I was greatly let down.  The film had a story that could go anyway it wanted to but decided to try and play it safe with a lackluster slasher with other horror elements scattered throughout.  The acting in this one is actually pretty great.  The entire cast delivers some great performances and very unique characters that use their ethnicity and sexual orientation as a way to develop themselves.  No one cast member stands out from the other and they are all consistent in their performances which is a shame considering how the final film turned out.  The story for this one is one that has been used several times before in films and television.  This happened several times in television with the most popular being the Are You Afraid of the Dark? episode and most recently in film with the superior horror comedy Final Girls.   So many doors were opened when the cast was tossed into their own horror movie but they tried to play it safe by attempting to be a shitty slasher with no originality or entertaining values.  In fact, if you want to see this story done right then I would suggest picking up Final Girls where the laughs are plenty and the story is better written.  Finally, those of you looking for the entertaining kill scenes that makes horror so enjoyable will be very upset.  The film has some of the weakest kills I have seen in a horror film in the last few years.  We get one comical death with a glow in the dark dildo but that is about it. The practical effects we get for the kills is very minimal and not that impressive.  Overall, OMG...We're in a Horror Movie is a film that I was expecting to make me laugh from beginning to end while showering me with blood.  The film did neither and was a huge let down.  The film deserves at least one viewing but it is nothing more than a mediocre horror film.
