The zombie sub-genre has become stale over the last few years thanks to The Walking Dead. They are all the same and try to capture the drama that TWD has following a group of survivors that fight among themselves and other survivors while fending off the undead horde. I loved the sub-genre before there was dozens of these films released every week with all of them following the same boring ass story. Something has to be added to them now to make them stand out just like one of the newest Wild Eye films Bigfoot vs. Zombies. With a title like that who wouldn't enjoy themselves? As soon as I heard Wild Eye was releasing this Polonia no budget flick I had to see it. I reached out to them and they were kind enough to send a copy my way.
The film takes place at a body farm where scientists lay the dead out in different environments to watch how they decay for forensic purposes. However, the scientist in charge is using a chemical that makes the bodies rot quicker which in turn allows him to make more money when they bring in new bodies. That chemical does more than makes the bodies rot quicker, it brings them back to life. Now the cadaver deliverers, the scientist and his employees, a security guard, and big game hunter are all locked in the compound while a group of the undead are after them. They all must work together, along with bigfoot, in order to fight the living dead menace.
I was excited for this film. For one, I am a fan of anything following cryptozoology and second, I have a soft spot for the zombie sub-genre. When I heard it was directed by Mark Polonia, one half of the Polonia brothers, I knew I would have fun. The acting in this one is actually better than I expected. I was expecting goofy characters with no real attempt at creating a serious role. This was not the case. The cast was actually great. With that being said, I hated the zombies. They just staggered around in one spot and made no effort at moving forward. They just stood still with their backs arched like they were holding in a serious shit. Not very menacing. When I hear zombies I immediately think of the gold standard, Night of the Living Dead. The zombies were horrible and not in a funny way. The story for this one is just absurd as the title sounds. We get some of the dumbest looking zombies fighting one of the worst looking Sasquatch to ever come across a television screen. The story is that simple but that is where it's fun. It doesn't over complicate a simple sub-genre with survival drama. It takes the Dead Next Door approach and succeeds. Finally, the film has several on screen kills that are cheap but still fun. The effects are far from perfect but they fit the film. The undead and bigfoot both look like shit which is a drag. I have seen so many horror films involving bigfoot where the beast looks like shit. We are in need of a bigfoot flick where the beast looks amazing. Overall, Bigfoot vs. Zombies is like that girl all the guys wants to be friends with in high school. It is cheap but fun as fuck. If you are looking for a good laugh at the no budget cost then this film was made for you. Check it out.
