Horror and urban legends often come together to make some of the most memorable horror films to ever cross the screen.  We have the film itself, Urban Legend, that tossed several urban legends into one Scream style film, when then have the Candyman film that was a huge horror hit that focused around the Candyman urban legend with dozens more that have been released over the years.  Urban legends continue to inspire horror even to this day.  The legend of Bloody Mary has intrigued pre-teens for decades and been the center for dozens of horror films.  Not long ago Dark Libra Productions reached out to me to review their newest short Bloody Mary: Possession.  Just like every other time before, I agreed to check out.  Thanks for letting me check out this unique short.
The film follows a young man who is in a serious relationship with a beautiful, young woman.  He has the stress of adulthood on his shoulders and is then pressured by his girlfriend to get married.  He tells her no and she turns to the legend of Bloody Mary to see if he is the one she will marry.  In the coming days the young man sees things out the corner of his eye and then finds that he is being stalked by a female.  He then learns what she had done and is now set to pay the consequence for summoning her.
Bloody Mary is a legend we all know but the story varies depending on where you live.  Here in the south the legend goes that if you say her name in a mirror with lights off three times then she will appear and kill those that wronged you.  For the most part, this is the universally known story for Bloody Mary.  However, is does change depending on your region.  Bloody Mary: Possession had a different spin on the Bloody Mary Legend that I am not accustomed to.  I actually enjoyed that aspect a little better.  The acting in this one is very amateurish.  The cast is very small and they show a lot of heart but their performance was just all over the place.  They have no conviction when saying their lines which makes these scenes awkward to watch.  Some more rehearsing and on camera experience would have helped in that regard.  The story for this one was hit and miss with me.  I really liked the twisting of the Bloody Mary legend to incorporate the love stricken woman trying to find her future husband only to become possessed but the film went about it all wrong.  The film starts out on a serious note like most supernatural films do.  The film then switches it up and goes for the goofy comedy like a Troma or Chris Seaver film.  This clashed and completely ruined the tension the beginning of the short created.  I love serious horror film and I love horror comedies but these two types of films should never cross paths.  It completely ruins the feel of the film.  Finally, those of you looking for blood and guts will not be happy with this one.  The film does have some laughs and horrible computer generated images but no real gore.  Overall, Bloody Mary: Possessions is a decent short that has some genuine laughs and a solid story.  Sadly, that story was not executed to it's fullest potential but it is still worth your time.  Check it out just don't expect a game changer.
