Throughout history many great things have been combined with other great things to create something quite unique. In the film world many genres have collided with others but none have made the lasting impression that horror and sci-fi has. These cross genre collaborations were prominent during the 50 and 60s drive-in scene and have inspired a plethora of films since then. In fact, that brings me to my next review. The film, The Attack of the Brain People, was sent to me for review from the fine folks over at Mass Grave Pictures. The film is actually a web-series by directors Louie Cortes and Lindsay Serrano. So thank you guys over at MGP for hooking me up!
The film follows a young couple as they try to make the most out of a beautiful day. The two enjoy a picnic in a meadow when they witness something out of the ordinary. The young couple spot something falling from the sky and head out into the nearby woods to search for the object. However, the two become separated and when the young man finds his lady something has happened. She is convulsing and a black substance is smeared all over her mouth. She then tries to attack him forcing him to flee from the woods where he is greeted by men in black suits. The young man is then grabbed and taken to an underground laboratory where scientists are running experiments on extraterrestrial brains and an intergalactic conspiracy is revealed.
I really enjoy living in today's society with the technology and modern advancements that I have become accustomed to. However, I would have loved to live during the 50s and 60s during the drive-in era. The films of this era were so campy and fun which is something many films released today no longer have. However, The Attack of the Brain People took everything that made these sci-fi/horror classics so fun and made a film that does not parody these flicks but pays homage to them. The acting in this flick was actually very well done. The entire cast made their roles fun. With that being said, this was the one aspect that separated this film from the classics. In general, the acting in the classic horror/sci-fi flicks tended to be laughably bad. That added to the charm. I'm not saying the decent acting took away from the film, because it did not, I'm just saying that was one of the differences. The story for this film is nothing original but it is the perfect homage to the films of the atom age of horror. The film has camp, intentionally horrible special effects, cheesy dialogue, and enough fake brains to last a life time. Finally, this is not the kind of film you would want to see if you are in the mood for loads of blood and gore. However, those looking for a solid film that is fun and entertaining then I recommend this one!
