Just Desserts: The Making of Creepshow Blu-Ray

In the world of horror cinema anyone with common sense wouldn’t deny “Creepshow” a cult status, but the American Blu-ray and DVD releases would have you believe differently.  “Creepshow” was released by Warner Brothers on DVD and Blu-Ray with nothing but a trailer. “Just Desserts” was created by Michael Felsher as a wonderful companion piece in 2007. This documentary never made it to a US disc until now! Any horror enthusiast would have come across Felsher’s work by now; his work has graced many horror and cult releases, often turning regular editions of films into special editions. This is due to his intriguing documentaries, inquisitive interviews, and insightful featurettes that fill out the discs.
“Just Desserts” has so much going for it; it can stand on its own and it most certainly does. The documentary includes interviews with a slew of the cast and crew, including legends like George Romero, Tom Savini, Bernie Wrightson, Tom Atkins, John Harrison, and even Adrienne Barbeau. These friendly faces remind us how truly special “Creepshow” was with just its talent alone. These big players talk about their inspirations from EC comics to how the special effects were orchestrated and everything in between. We not only get insight from the very well-known names but also hear from the script supervisor and a handful of grips; the approach being the more sides to a story, the better, helping flesh out every little detail.  The documentary goes over each short in loving detail with anecdotes from those involved. They recall moments with cast and crew who have passed or were unavailable for the doc as well as their own recollections. These interviews are spliced with clips and photos from the Tom Savini’s personal collection of behind the scenes footage giving us a little bit of insight on how things went down, eliminating any possible dull moments. The doc’s editing uses the playful comic style of the subject matter sparingly, bringing up the enjoyment factor and paying homage, making it all a nice treat after chowing down on “Creepshow”.
Synapse and Felsher wouldn’t leave a disc barebones and this is no exception. Included are two commentary tracks (one being 3 audio interviews), elongated interviews, extra interviews, location visits, television coverage, and even Tom Savini’s Scream Greats Vol. 1 (also including a newly made commentary). Scream Greats is a great time piece as well as an interesting look into the career of Tom Savini for those unfortunate enough to have missed it. “Just Desserts” by itself is worth a spin, but with all these features its well worth the purchase price.
