Henenlotter
continues the saga of the Bradley’s with one final war. This time Duane, his
little demented and disfigured brother “Belial”, and Granny Ruth with her
freaks take on a small town’s police force. This small town setting brings
different scenery to the world of Henenlotter and it is appreciated. Similar in
tone to “Basket Case 2”, “Basket Case 3: The Progeny” is pretty insane and goes
even as far to introduce a whole nursery of offspring from the love sequence
between Eve and Belial in the previous film. ““Basket Case 3” sports enjoyable
and zany characters in outlandish situations; these are expected due to the
title and previous entries in the series. Also sported are some improved
animatronics on the more elaborate characters; instead of them staring blankly
without much movement, we see blinks and minor twitches on a few. Add in a few
more grunts and squeals and it all helps with their growth. The character
designs don’t completely match from the previous film and a couple even
disappear and appear out of nowhere, but these minor complaints are easily
forgiven. The relationship between Belial and Duane is the main focus,
continuing a complicated history. Duane is put in the more unforgivable role of
the two this time unlike the first of the series. The cartoon style deaths fit in nicely with
the previous mentioned special effects. Victims at the hands of Belial endure
eyes bulging due to strangulation, heads twisting, and skin ripping in an over
the top fashion. The fast food invasion and Personality sing along scenes are
so ridiculous; it’s hard not to at least smile. Is it possible for one to not
garner an emotion while witnessing a group of “undesirables” soaking up the
joys of everyday life? As the movie comes to an end, we are given one final
showdown with super “Belial” in a body of armor with attached weapons. An
all-time absurdity has been reached in terms of the Basket Case world… an
“Aliens” parody! “Basket Case 3: The
Progeny” is a fun little sequel we should be happy we got and equally surprised
it was ever made. Although it won’t stop this reviewer from day dreaming about
a continuation of the story where Granny Ruth and the freaks have begun
domination of the world! The Synapse disc looks and sounds good and includes a
trailer no other features to report on.
