No horror July continues as I check out another release from Wild Eye Releasing.  After watching Zapped! I decided it was time to check out Sexina.  After discovering that Zapped! was not as sleazy as I was lead to believe.  What I loved about my no horror January was all the sleazy films I check out so I needed to pick that up.  Before going into Sexina I had no idea what it was about.  It looked campy and cheesy but with a title like Sexina I assumed it would be sleazy and fun in a classic Vinegar Syndrome kind of way.  Sadly, when I popped it in it was not the kind of flick I was expecting.  It was entertaining in it's own right but not the film I would expect with sex in the title.  Once again, thanks Wild Eye for sending it my way.
The film follows pop star Sexina (D'Avella) who is known the world over for her hit songs who is also a private investigator in her down time.  A case comes across her desk involving a former pop star turned scientist.  He was recently abducted and his family wants him returned safe.  They turn to Sexina in hopes of finding him.  Through her network of connections she learns that the owner of a record label (Adam West) has kidnapped him and used his power of bionics to create the superior boy band that will knock Sexina down the charts.  She must now team up with another pop star in order to put a stop to this perfect boy band.
Sexina is the kind of film I would have never watched on my on but since it was sent to me for review I figure it was worth a shot.  I honestly thought it would be a sleazy no budget film in the same lines as a Sleaze Box.  However, its not that kind of film at all and the title is very, very, misleading.  The acting in this one is fun but amateurish.  The film's lead, Lauren D'Avella, is an interesting choice for the role of Sexina having virtually no experience before this film.  She gives the role her best but it is far from a starring role performance.  We also get a small performance from Adam West who was clearly working for a paycheck and not an award.  The remainder of the cast is fun but they do very little to hold the viewer's attention but they are not that bad.  The story for this one is surprisingly fun.  In a million years would I think I would find a film about a pop star p.i. is fun but this one works.  The cast may not be breaking down walls but the characters were very well written and the story flows very smoothly.  With that being said, I could see this one pairing very well with Josie and the Pussycats.  Finally, this one is billed as a comedy but the laughs were very flat and rather boring.  The laughs were cheap and not in a campy, cheesy kind of way.  They are just tossed in to fit the story but have no real humor.  Overall, Sexina is a fun little film.  Sure, it's not perfect nor is it brilliant but it did occupy my time.  I did not feel like I wasted my time watching it and it entertained so give it a go.
