Jim Wynorski is one hell of a filmmaker.  He has had a legendary career and has released some amazing movies.  Most of you may know him as the man behind the 80s classic Chopping Mall.  Jim has had an amazing career and has been lucky enough to release at least one movie a year since 1984.  That is a career unlike any other.  Back in 1995 Wynorski teamed up with horror legend Linda Blair along with Julie Strain for the film Sorceress.   The film would go on to form a sequel and is one that I had heard about for sometime but never actually had the chance to check it out.  That changed when Synapse Films released the film on blu.  I reached out to my friends over there at Synapse and they were kind enough to hook me up with a review copy.  Thanks guys!
The film follows a young man who is unaware he is married to a witch.  She placed him under a spell where he would love no one else but him and then married him.  When another guy at the firm is made partner she works her magic and he is in a horrible automobile accident.  Now her husband is partner but he catches her in the middle of her magic ritual and snaps.  He tries to leave her but there is a scuffle and she falls over the railing and dies.  Sometime passes and he gets back into the groove of things and starts talking to his ex.  What he doesn't know is that the man he worked with that was injured in the car accident is actually married to another witch and she knows his now dead wife was responsible for her husband's disability.  She uses her magic to make his new girlfriend act like his dead wife until her husband catches her practicing and it forcing his hand into stopping her before she does something deadly.
You never know what you will get yourself into with a Wynorski film but one thing is for sure, he will fill the movie with as much sex as possible.  Sorceress is no exception but it was more than just another 90s sleazy HBO special.  It had a fun story and some decent acting and not just sex scene after sex scene.  The acting in this one is decent.  The cast is far from award winning but they do just enough to pull the viewer in and hold their attention.  Linda Blair does a solid job but I feel she does not give her role her full attention.  It just feels lacking.  With that being said, Julie Strain nails it.  She is seductive, vindictive, with a hint of evil.  She was amazing and really set the tone for the film and the story.  The story for this one is just as fun as any other Wynorski film.  I personally feel that we don't have enough horror film's focused around witches but Wynorski has been doing his best to give us more having released several over his film making career.  This particular story is clever and brings the witch into modern day.  The story is full of beautiful women, sex, scandal, and death.  What more could you ask for?  When combined it feels like something you would find on HBO after midnight but it works.  Finally, the film is not full of blood.  The film is story rich and character driven but does not have the bloodshed that I would expect from a film like this.  Overall, Sorceress is one hell of a good time.  It's sexy, sleazy, and fun.  The film may no be perfect but neither am I but I still enjoyed myself.
