Writing for Horror Society has opened up a world of movies that I would have never found on my own. Movies like Bloodsucka Jones, The Campground, and so on would have never been found if it wasn't for Horror Society and the range the site gets. Now, I get press releases daily for films where most of them are new to me. Case in point, the 2014 horror comedy Crazy Bitches. A few weeks ago I received a press release for the sequel Crazy Bitches Get Crazier. When I saw that this was a sequel I reached out to the director, Jane Clark, and spoke with her about the film and she offered to send the first film over for me to check out. Thanks Jane for allowing Horror Society and myself the opportunity to see your work.
The film follows a group of women and one gay guy as they head out for a weekend getaway. Things start off innocently enough but these women start to push each other's buttons while trying to impress everyone with their vanity but things turn deadly when they learn that the cabin they are in was once the site of a horrific murder and the killer was never apprehended. The girls become weary once they hear the news and soon learns that one of their own showed up before them and is nowhere to be seen. They start to fight amongst themselves and soon the real killer is revealed.
I hate hearing the term "girl horror." It sounds so stupid to me. Women have always played a part in horror especially post-slasher craze. The final girls in the classic slasher films showed that men were not the only ones strong enough to survive. Since then there has been countless horror films centered around women so when people call a movie a "girl horror" flick I want to cringe. Sex has nothing to do with horror. I have seen just as many good horror films made up of a mostly female cast as I have with a film made up of all male. When I shared the news about the upcoming sequel on the site and spread it throughout the various social media accounts I noticed that a lot of men clapped back about how girl horror and female horror sucked. These assholes have no idea what they were talking about. Especially where Crazy Bitches is concerned because this movie was solid. The acting in this one great. The whole cast brings a different character to the table which is different from most of the films centered around spoiled bitches that use their looks to cruise through life. Movies or television shows like this gives the viewer the same characters over and over again with little to no difference between them. These characters tend to be flat and forgettable. Not the Crazy Bitches. The cast really makes each and every character stand out. Their imdb pages may not be that long or impressive but they can fucking act. The story for this one is very post-Scream. It is self aware and mockingly plays with the slasher cliché that follows a killer who was wronged in one way or another and returns to have their revenge. However, an all female (mostly female) slasher is not new. We've seen it before with films like Slumber Party Massacre and Girls Nite Out but there hasn't been that many in recent years with the exception of Spirit Camp. This is a welcomed change in the midst of a large slasher fad where filmmakers attempt to make 80s slashers. With all that being said, there is several dry scenes that are rather boring and full or uninteresting dialogue that has little to nothing to do with the story. These scenes really need to be trimmed down to make the story flow better and make it easier on the viewer. Finally, those of you looking for a slasher with a body count are in luck. This one has several kills. Sadly, they are not that imaginative nor are they that memorable with the exception of one. Most of the kills use a some computer enhanced effects which are very noticeable. The effects are great when we actually get to see them but the CGI takes a lot away from the kill. Overall, Crazy Bitches was a fun slasher. If you like cat fights and carnage then this one is right up your alley. Check it out.
