Rating (out of 5):
When I first heard about Herschell Gordon Lewis I heard about the films Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs, and The Wizard of Gore. I heard other horror junkies talk about The Gore Gore Girls but I was oblivious to who directed it and what is was about. The night I ordered the two HGL BluRays I saw this one was included on one of the discs. I did a little looking online and found out that it was indeed a HGL film and it would be his last film for over 30 years. After watching The Wizard of Gore I had no desire to watch another one, however, I could not stand the thought of buying a movie and not watching it. Because this one was on the same disc as WoG I decided to throw it in and give it a go...
The film opens with a go-go dancer fixing her hair while sitting in front of a mirror. She is then attacked and has her face bashed into the mirror before having her throat slit. We are now introduced to the coolest mother fucker to ever cross the silver screen, Abe Gentry (Kress). Gentry is a private investigator and is hired by a local paper to find the scoop on who killed the dancer before the police do. Gentry visits the club that the deceased danced at and meets another dancer named Marlene (Lubin). Marlene is a bit of a bitch and and her and Gentry do not get along. Marlene also works for Mr. Mabely, who owns multiple dance clubs around town where Marlene works at all of them. As Gentry visits each club, following what lead he can, he meets and questions multiple dancers. All of the dancers are then murdered in bizarre ways. Regardless of the club Gentry visits, he runs in to Marlene at each one and little by little she says strange things to Gentry. One night Mr. Mabely holds an amateur dance contest. During the contest Gentry keeps commenting on how perfect one of the dancers is to the reporter, Nancy (Farrell), that hired him. Nancy wants to feel Gentry inside her and becomes jealous at his remarks. In a drunken state, she gets on stage and dances. Surprisingly, she wins and the two go back to her apartment. Nancy passes out on the couch and the killer appears with acid in hand and plans on pouring it on Nancy. Gentry knocks it from her hand with his pimp cane and when she pulls a knife on him he does the same to that. Gentry had actually used Nancy as bait after putting together the things that Marlene had said. Marlene was pissed at the other dancers because they were better than her so she offed them. She also wanted to kill Nancy because she won the amateur contest.
When I sat down to watch this one, I did not have high hopes for it. The Wizard of Gore is, in every aspect, a shitty film. However, it is able to sucker the viewer in with shocks and plenty of gore. Unfortunately, this movie is unable to do that. This film does offer bizarre kills, but it is beyond saving. The acting is incredibly horrible and most of the cast have no other acting credit. Like other films in the HGL filmography, this movie is the only film most of the cast and crew had actually worked on. The effects are ridiculously bad. Most of the kills are done using a fake knife across the throat with a line of fake blood following the blade. However, in some of the scenes this primitive special effect is still too complicated for them to pull off. Whenever the knife is moved across the neck of the victim you can see the blood squirting from the top of the knife. About the only thing I really liked about the movie was the kills. One of the girls has her head stuck in a pan of boiling oil and another one has her ass beat with a meat tenderize. This kills are seriously funny instead of gruesome. Other than the kills, the film is pure rubbish. If your looking for a good film from this era then grab The Undertaker and His Pals and ignore this one.
