Rating (out of 5):
Indie horror has always been my favorite out of all things horror. So much heart and creativity goes into indie horror which is something bigger budgeted flicks tend to lack. However, history seems to repeat itself and indie horror is no exception. Trends tend to pop up here and there in horror and it affects indie horror more than the big budgeted flicks. The success of AMCs The Walking Dead has spawned so many zombie films that it is hard to count. However, with all the zombie films popping up similar to TWC we still get some zombie films that are nothing like TWC and that brings me to the 2012 zombie flick Blood Orgy at Beaver Lake. The film was clearly a cheap zombie film but nothing like TWC. After looking at the DVD's cover art (shown above) I got the Redneck Zombies vibe which in it's time spawned several other low budget flicks because it was a simple story and could be done on any budget. I grabbed Blood Orgy last year at Fright Night Film Fest in Kentucky from one of the cast members and threw it on my shelf where I forgot about it until recently when I was in the mood for a no budget zombie flick.
The film follows two female henchmen who visit a scientist who is working on creating a new drug to sell. He tests the new drug out on himself and it turns him into a sex crazed zombie and he attacks his assistant. The two ladies kill him and tells their boss that all the drugs were taken to Beaver Lake and destroyed to prevent him from getting his hands on the tainted substance. The two then decide that take the drugs to Beaver lake as a bit of a getaway. However, along the way they lose a barrel and two bumbling country rednecks find the barrel and decide to get fucked up. This turns them into sex crazed zombies just like the doctor and they run rampant through the woods killing everything they come in contact with and that includes a group of hippies who are out to have a little camping fun.
Some film makers set out to make a serious horror film while others try to entertain the viewer and give them something over the top and fun. With a title like Blood Orgy at Beaver Lake the viewer knows exactly what they are getting into. This film is over the top and full of crude humor and raunchy jokes all while trying to give the viewer some low budget horror. The acting in this film is horrible. The entire cast tries so hard but the experience and knowledge is just not there. More experience and a lot more conviction would have went a long way. The story for this one is one we have seen before but on a micro-budget. The film felt like the Troma classic Redneck Zombies meets the wrap around story from the anthology film Chillerama. I really enjoyed the story in that aspect. The rednecks turning into zombies after taking some drugs to get fucked up is pretty damn funny but adding the sex crazed portion to that same story is pure indie horror gold. Finally, the film has several on screen kills but the special effects are not the best. In fact, the practical effects are extremely weak and a bit of a let down. Overall, Blood Orgy at Beaver Lake is a solid no budget zombie flick that has some laughs to go along with the flaws. If you like humor with your horror then check this one out!
