The Ecstacy of Isabel Mann

Written and directed: Jason Figgis
Starring:
Nicole Bermingham, Kevin Buckley, John Campbell, Ellen Mullen
Format: online screener
Year: 2012 (filmed)

Gruesome cannibal intro occurs in the forest.  Nice chase through the field follows. Sudden a splash of color.  The red stuff.  I like the use of leaves here.

So far this is impressing me with good camerawork and composition.

Contemplation occurs clothed,  bloodied,  and seated in the shower.

A serious scene of character development is a sudden change of pace.  It feels like a loss of momentum.

That looks like a dog face in the wood.

Birds in the sky and on sticks in the rippling water.  I hope these gorgeous shots are a constant theme in this film.

Family at the table eating breakfast.  The young son recalls school.  The older son  is starting a metal band.

Black and white,  we're back in the forest.  Its a vampire story.  These can handle the sun light.  They don't sparkle.  They are drinking from the victim.  This is when the daughter was made.

Insane time-lapse shot of day to night with the mountains and river.

Kids are missing and the cops take notice.  Up the stairs and down the hall,  looking slick.  The mirror in this interrogation scene is a nice touch.

This phone call scene is telling story.  This is important character development to the story.  It lingers.

Still lingering.  You done yet?

Cops yapping in the car.

Yap, yap, yap.

Some cool bloody feeding scenes peppered in.  I think I was supposed to laugh at the kid with the guitar.  I didn't.

More sunshine on the water.  Girl in bed.

Wtf is this music?  Why?  Fuck off.  Ruining this part rapidly.  Lingering...  Ugh.

Screams.  More sunshine on the water.   Similar shot of the house.  Third party time.

The cop is a good actor.

More nature scenes and now dubstep?

I fell asleep during the dubstep,  for just a second.

Yelling and wailing in the woods.  Cop finds the vamps feeding.  He tries to intervene.  He ends up a meal. Not before they kill a kid in front of him.  Snap her neck like a slim Jim.  Too bad Macho Man Randy Savage isn't in this film.

Oh now she's visiting the long winded phone chick.  This is sure to be a yap fest.

She's all bloody and shit.  They should make out.

Blinking.  Sobbing.  Here comes the yapping.

Tears run down her blood covered face.

What the fuck did she just say? E-NUN-CI-ATE. Please.

Yap yap yap.  Bitchslap!  I didn't mean to kill her.

Now she's dead.  That's a hell of a bitchslap. Crying ain't gone bring her back,  child.  Lingering whining and sobbing ensue.

Where the fuck is Van Helsing when you need him.

Now the whole family is here to wait and sob.

Here comes cop 2.  Please let him go Vampire Hunter D on all these assholes. Hell, he can go Milosh on em all as far as I'm concerned.

Blah blah blah.  Superintendent douchemonger. You don't know shit about brutal.  Sinbad's comedy special is more brutal than this.

Ooh camera 2, now they're getting edgy.

And there's camera 10.

More yap and blah as Isabel is visited in the psych ward. Stupid questions. I'm sorry.  Sigh.

Smooches.  I love you?

Fuck this,  I'm done. I'll do my duty and finish it though.

Remember all your loved ones and cry.

Feel the emo, cry and sob.

Labcoat guy ain't playing.  He's got keys.  It seems as though Isabel had other plans.

Credits are rolling.

This film has a strength in cinematography.  Its packed with excellent angles and compositions. It was filmed entirely in Ireland.  Its gorgeous there.  I'm fully confident in telling you that this film is very likely better than I make it sound.  It's just not my kind of thing, however, you may enjoy it.  Its well-executed, and overall quite an accomplishment.  If you're at all curious, you should check it out.  For me, personally, not so much though.  I'm grateful I was given the opportunity to see it.  Thank you, Jason Figgis.

2.5/5
