Nothing is sacred when it comes to horror and that includes one of the biggest religious holidays of the year. Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year and the second biggest religious holiday and that makes it prime real estate for horror. We have several horror films that takes place during the Christmas season but very few of them are worth watching. Last year I watched the horror flick Jack Frost (not the Michael Keeton flick) for the first time and really enjoyed it. While I was writing my review for the 1996 flick I learned that there was a 2000 sequel called Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman. I did a little looking and was able to find it on amazon.com in a 12 movie pack from Mill Creek. I grabbed it and threw it in my collection to watch during the Christmas season this year.
The film follows Sheriff Sam who is seeking a therapist to get over the events that befell him and his little town in 1996. The doctor reccomends a weekend getaway and he decides to go with his wife and family to a tropical island to party and relax. While he visits the therapists, a team of scientists has been running tests on the watery remains of Jack Frost. However, they accidentally let him out and he heads to the same island to get his revenge on Sam. He is now stronger than ever and can turn anything into snow and ice. He turns the island into a winter wonderland and starts killing the vacationers with no one believing Sam when he says Jack is back. However, once Jack finally collects himself and turns into the killer snowman in front of everyone. Same then rallies everyone that is left alive to find back against Jack and his killer snowballs!
Sequels rarely live up to the original film but cheesy horror flicks are rarely able to capture that cheesy feel of the first film without over doing it. Films that are campy usually end up that way on complete accident. These films were made to be serious and the camp came about unexpectedly. Jack Frost is no exception. The film was made to be a horror film that was a little off with some jokes and holiday themed kills. However, the films one liners and goofy looking character made that film a campy creature slasher with a lot of humor. However, the 2000 sequel tried to give the viewers the same amount of humor and cheese only to create one of the worst films I have ever had to witness. The acting in this film is horrible even with some of the recurring cast. Most of the cast just read their lines without even trying to convey any kind of emotion or conviction. The story for this one is more of the first film but with some shitty changes. The first film followed a man who dies only to be turned into a killer snowman and vows revenge on the man who arrested him. This film is a snowman is killed only to be resurrected as a snowman and vows to kill the man that kill him. Nothing new except this film takes place on a tropical paradise. Finally, this film has a lot of on screen kills that are very unique but poorly executed. The practical effects and gore look great but most of the kills are ruined with CGI and visual effects. They are some of the worst I have seen and remind me a lot of the early 90s computer games. Overall, Jack Frost 2 is one of the worst films,as well as, sequels that I have ever witnessed. The film is a cheaper than the first and a hell of a lot worse. Stay away!
