I love when I hear about a movie that I have never heard about before and soon I find out that the person behind the film also directed several other flicks. I also find it strange that people spread the word about a certain film and completely ignore the other works by this filmmaker. The perfect example of this is George A. Romero. His films Nights of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead are fucking phenomenal but no one ever talks about his films Martin and Two Evil Eyes. When I first heard of director Cory J. Udler I always heard people talk about Incest Death Squad and I had no idea he had directed the religious flick Mediatrix. Just like with the IDS trilogy, I ordered Mediatrix when I ordered them and while I was watching those flicks I had to go ahead and give this flick a go.
This follows a young woman who as a child believed she had special gifts from the lord above and used that gift to gain a following of religious fanatics. However, as she got older she shied away from religion and started living the life of a party girl after a fat man molested her. This displeases her mother who is embedded in her faith. She tries to convince her daughter to find her way back to God and use the give he bestowed on her. She quickly realizes that she can make a living exploiting her gifts and taking the money of the believers. An even better opportunity arises when a young follower of hers visits. This young follower just happens to be married to the lard ass that diddled her when she was little. She moves in with the young woman and man to exact her revenge. She drugs the obese man resulting in him having the appearance of having a stroke. While he is bed ridden she uses this as an opportunity to get even more closer to the young woman and with the help of a priest's two henchmen she is able trick the young woman into signing over all her possessions to her. Using the money she is able to gain an even bigger audience and riches.
When I watched Udler's Incest Death Squad series I never thought he would be able to make another film that would surpass them. However, I was sadly mistaken. Every director has that one film that their fans consider their best work. Romero has Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, Carpenter has Halloween, Wes Craven has A Nightmare on Elm St, and Cory Udler has Mediatrix. This film literally blew every expectation I had for it out of the water. It was honestly that good. The acting in this one is great by most of the cast. Paula Duerksen and Kaylee Williams gave a great performance. Paula is so convincing as an evil whore who preys on the faithful while Kaylee is very adept at portraying characters that are innocent and helpless. Sadly, I would have liked to see the skills of Greg Johnson used more instead of him playing a mentally ill character. The story for this one is fucking unreal and a blast to watch unfold in front of you. This film really does show that Udler is not fan of organized religion and the close-minded people that obsess over it. The film itself is rather shocking and full of "what the fuck" moments which is rare among indie horror but not rare among Udler and his films. Finally, this film does not have the blood that Incest Death Squad has but this isn't the kind of film that requires blood and gore. This is a film that shows you just how easy it is to for people to succumb to religion while others profit from their weakness. Overall, Mediatrix is a fucking masterpiece of indie cinema. It is a well written film that takes an unconventional route that really deserves to be seen. Check it out!
