Several weeks ago, or maybe even months ago now, I started receiving press releases for the upcoming animated fantasy epic The Spine of Night featuring one hell of a voice cast.  The film's posters were absolutely amazing and when the trailer released I couldn't refrain from watching.  Typically, if a movie interests me I will avoid the trailer so I don't spoil my initial thoughts of the film with preconceived notions.  However, I was too eager to see the film so I broke my rule and watched the trailer.  I was fucking hooked and the second I was given the chance to request a copy for review I did just that.  I want to thank RLJE for sending this one over in this gorgeous steelbook for me to review.
The film follows Tzod (Lawless) who wields the cosmic power of the blue flower with her tribe in the swamp when her swamp and people are slaughtered by an evil lord that is looking to expand his reign.  This sets in motion a chain of events that finds the power of the blue flower falling into the wrong hands sending Tzod on a journey to find more or watch the world burn at the hands of a greedy warlord.
The Spine of the Night was everything I had hoped it was and then some.  It was violent, epic in scale, and the story pulls you in with no remorse.  I found myself mesmerized by the story and once I had watched it I had to give it another go.  It truly is an amazing adult animated film that I can see myself watching over and over again.  The voice acting in this one is great.  I fucking loved the cast and the characters they voiced.  In fact, my biggest gripe with the characters is that most of them are not in the film as much as I would have liked.  The film is so face paced that most of the characters are only in the film for a brief moment before it progresses.  The story for this one is fucking amazing.  Though it relies more on the visuals it still delivers a fun and immersive story that holds your attention better than anything on thicctok.  A lot of movie fans will want to compare this one to Heavy Metal if it was written by Robert E. Howard.  It's a fantasy adventure with animated nudity, gore, and amazing epic scenes of magic.  I understand the connection most would have with the two but The Spine of Night relies heavily on visuals but still has a coherent story to follow while Heavy Metal is a sci-fi inspired acid trip with great visuals and a lacking story.  I fucking loved how wild, graphic, and epic in scope as it was.  I was fucking hooked and as soon as it was over I immediately hit play on it again and enjoyed it just as much the second time around as the first.  Finally, the film has some of the most gruesome and graphic deaths scenes I have ever seen in an animated film.  I absolutely fucking loved the amount of blood, gore, and bodies that are stripped apart atom by atom.  It was fucking wild and I still can't stop thinking about them days later.  Overall, The Spine of Night is a must see for genre fans.  I know it's not a horror film and very much an epic fantasy adventure but it's one hell of a film.  It's surely an instant classic that will amass a huge following.  I highly recommend it.
