Last year was a shit show but a few good things came out of it.  Some indie filmmakers were given time to finish projects they were slowly working on or used their quarantine time to start projects.  Fangboner director Nathan Rumler used that time to finish his sleazy horror hit Amityville Exorcist.  I watched and reviewed the film prior to it's release and it would be one of my favorite films of last year.  A week or so ago Rumler announced that he had finished a short that would soon be available for purchase.  As soon as I saw his post saying it was on his site I had to jump on it.
The short is an experimental horror short that doesn't really have a story to follow.  We follow random images, scenarios, and people before we witness a man's suicide and the dismemberment of a woman.
When Nate Rumler, the king of transcending, says he just finished an experimental horror short you can't but wonder how fucked up it's going to be.  If you have seen any of his previous films, or any film he's attached to for that matter, then you know he is extremely crafty and creative.  He has the imagination of a real filmmaker and you never know what he's going to hit you with next.  Wraith is a wild one.  It runs around 16 minutes and is nothing like what I expected which is a good thing.  The acting in this one is non-existent.  The people in the film are doing random things like changing a tire, walking through a home, smiling, and dismembering a corpse but no real acting or dialogue.  The story for this one is whatever you make of it.  I feel a heavy influence from James Bell in this one with a lot of Dog Dick mixed with some of his later works.  I really liked what we were given and how it unfolded but I don't think I could watch it again.  Just not enough meat on the bone so to speak.  Finally, the film starts out slow but soon hits a bloody mess with some spectacular practical effects.  I can only assume that these amazing practical effects were provided by James Bell and I'm also certain he provided some music for the film under his Kids Kill Kids moniker.  I really enjoyed the gore and how it was handled.  Overall, Wraith is not going to be for everyone.  It's strange, weird, and fucking gruesome.  I really enjoyed it and look forward to see what Rumler and Snatanic Productions brings us next.
